that is fine as long as you don't have a glass tank which could possibly break.

lots of people do that...I prefer to leave swimming room whole way around..You can still be creative with caves etc...here's a pic of my rockwork.

Detritus can accumulate in areas of low water flow when rock is stacked directly against the wall of the tank. Be sure to adjust your water pumps and flow carefully to avoid this.
