Rock work

Why does everyone make the magnets into round boulders or shelf like structures. Has anyone tried different extensions or different shapes?

They come in different size according to the video, if you've watched it. I've never ordered it myself. I've just discovered that yesterday online. Its an option, you can link up with the video to the manufacturer, and ask them. From the image online they seem to make them according to spec from the buyers as i understand.I'm assuming your refering to the Aquamag...

Couple layers of fiberglass cloth on a piece of wax paper and saturated it with epoxy resin to make the bulkhead out of.

After it cured I trimmed it to fit, drilled a hole in it for the overflow drain, and laid it in place with some glass strips and epoxy.

After the sump cured I drilled a hole in the bottom outside the sump and used a flush cutting trim router bit to remove the bottom outside the sump.

no more flattered lol

Well at the time i was researching good example of DIY rock work and typing aquascaping in google image at the time it didn't give any link like today just pictures so you didn't know who you where taking it from that was years ago. Now its different you get the links right away. So i try not to get it from the same site i'm posting on, in my collection of 5000 entries i don't know who's i got lol. But its all in admiration of the actual work of the person and his abilities i'm prsenting it to others as an idea to follow any way. Thats the reason for the thread. If you have other picture feel free like i said before in the thread to post your stuff on. It makes a better brain storming that way.

Great thread awesome pics..

I've been weary of the foam due to having to seal it. Sealer is bound to not last forever with snails or urchins scraping away at it leading to whatever is under it exposed.. That's just my theory though as I have no experience with it but I would not be comfortable with that..

All the posts you have included are awesome and great inspiration for those looking for examples and procedures like myself.. Thanks for sharing=).

In my thread i do explain the importance of 3 coatings of resin and to spray sand in between to create a crust, snails don't eat rock they eat algae they may nibble at a bit but it will take a while before the 3 layers of resin and sand and aragonite if you add to the last one. As far as i know the structure will last, if you take the time like all things in this hobby nothing good happens fast. My sculpture took two week straight 12 hours a day, 4 days was for the resin alone. If you rush it like so many do...; you get sloppy.... you get what you've put in.....The finishing resin and sand layers is the key to your success in foam scapping. Now by the way this is for greatstuff foam the creamy color foam . The pond foam is black its already water proof , because its for ponds, but the sealer helps for salt water and is less susceptible, to water damages. We still use a sealer to sand it for hiding the difference in colors with the rocky substrate around.

(edit to not take away from the thread)
I do understand the importance of patience my tank is 12 years old but it's just my opinion anyways Again not saying it's wrong that's just me =).. Looks great though I'm just using rods and cement or epoxy alone. Cause I'm a weiner ha ha..

Again thanks for the time put into this thread I really enjoyed learning the different methods..

Again not saying it's gonna happen that's just my opinion and me personally in 6 years "if" I start having issues first thing I would think is its gotta be the foam even if it's not.. Again not saying it's wrong that's just me =).. Looks great though I'm just using rods and cement or epoxy alone. Cause I'm a weiner ha ha..

My pleasure i didn't mean to sound preachy lol. Its would be nice to have a picture of your tank that be cool fts if possible thanks again.

Since we're on the subject of resin and sanding here's a nice little video about it to the point and the guy knows is stuff. Its also about aquascaping with pond foam.

He put only one coating i put 3 with sand and aragonite to build up a protective crust. You should too, you apply the second coat of resin on top of the sand and re sand and the thisd time you apply the resin on the sand you sand with a mix of sans and aragonite flakes.

This is a remodeling project of a huge and unusual shaped tank,
I lost the original first picture i've put the picture of the remodeled tank instead, the second picture , is darker but more accurate of the state of the tank before the renovations.

Coloring is optional and not necessary; remember, the corals will do it...unless its for freshwater tanks...
