RocketEngineer's 75g/125g Setup

I can understand about ironing out problems. I still need to get my magnesium up as well as replace all the heaters in all my tanks. I bought the Marineland Stealth heaters but with them being under recall, I have six of various sizes that need to be replaced soon. Plan to buy the magnesium and heaters at the same time so hopefully that will fix both prolems.

During the winter, the tank was evaporating 1-1.5 gallons a day. During that time I was using one teaspoon per gallon to make the kalk. With the summer coming along and the air outside being more humid, the evapration rate is right around 1 gpd but have kept with the 1 teaspoon per gallon. The nice thing about kalk directly in the ATO container is you can play with the concentrations to meet your needs. Using a kalk reactor, you don't have this flexability.

Hey, thanks for that information. I know my pH is going to stay low due to the closed environment of the tank room, so I think kalk will be one good way to combat that.

Do you have a test kit for magnesium? If so, which one?

TheFishMan65,
Since Marineland heaters had the problem, I'm not comfortable replacing the bad ones with more from the same company.

iwishtofish,
I use the Salifert test kit. I need to get a magnesium suppliment to improve the level. I'm thinking Bulk Reef Supply as theirs is one of the best value for the volume.

Over the last week I have come home to find the tank light off. Thinking it was something to do with the ballast I checked everything. Well last night I was sitting in the living room with a fan on the ballast and the light kept going on and off. After checking everything put a light into the power strip and realized the outlet was off. Turns out I had my controller turn off the light at 80F so as the tank warmed during the day the controller was kicking it off before the AC would turn on to cool down the room. I have since changed it to 82F so hopefully the light will stay on and the inhabitants won't be stressed by the light turning off and on.

This has been a busy month for me. I had two payloads in testing and worked 12 hour days, six days a week for three weeks to get them prepped. Once that was over, I got this:

PuppyPictures001.jpg

Her name is Ariel, she is about 3 months old and a Lab mix. No idea what the mix is though.

With everything else going on the tank has been on autopilot for the last month or so. Despite that, things are doing alright. The corals are growing and the fish are still around.

This Acan Lord now has three rows of polyps.

On this Acan Lord the second row of polyps are starting to fill out.

The brain is definitely growing.

The anemone seems to be getting larger. It is normally like this with most of it out of the hole in the rock.

In addition to the ones I already have, I went to Dr. Mac's today and picked up two new ones.

A branching Hammer coral

A candy cane frag.

If you are looking for cool corals, check out his website. The Under $15 section has a bunch of neat frags in it. Just be aware that they are small pieces but if you take care of them, they will eventually be some nice show pieces.

Beautiful puppy! She should be a lot of fun!

Your corals are looking great. I keep wanting to scoot over to Dr. Mac's, but it is quite a haul for me. Instead, I just went up to Exotic Aquatics (Baltimore) and picked up a couple frags (nice stuff there, too). You are pretty fortunate to have that great resource nearby. I missed his clam sale because my tank is not quite ready - bummed!!

iwishtofish,
I missed it too. With everything else going on, I'm going to hold off on getting one.

I just noticed something. The tank turned one year old last week. At this time last year the tank had water, dry rock and some live rock. Its amazing what can happen in a year.

Congrats on year number one! :)
Thanks.

Lookin good man. For once green in a tank doesn't look bad at all.

Congrats on the 1 year mark!

Thanks. One of the interesting things about my tank is that I have different types of halimeda. Given how well it grows, I'm more inclined to use it as a nutrient export as anything else. This past weekend I pulled out enough halimeda to fill a large specimen container.

I have always wondered why people killed themselves over having hair algae in their tanks. Personally, I grow the stuff in some areas and once the tuffs get big enough, I go in with my long handled grabber and pull them out. The snails do a good job of keeping it in check but eventually I have to intervene where they can't get to. Keeping it gives the pods places to reproduce and every tuff I can see is crawling with life. Using what nature provides is definitely easier than fighting something that's going to happen anyways.

This weekend I took another trip to Dr. Mac's and picked up three new corals. If you are reef keeping on a budget, check out the Under $15 corals. The frags may be small, but they are in nice shape and they have a nice wide selection.

A green polyp Stylophora

015-4.jpg

A blue polyp Montipora

017-1.jpg

This Montipora broke off the plug while I was trying to place it so for the moment its down in the rock.

I played around with the placement of my other two new corals.

011-3.jpg

The candy cane was placed on the right hand island after I pulled off a bunch of the halimeda.

014-3.jpg

The hammer head got knocked down by one of the snails and when I went to put it back, it broke off the base. So I stuck the branch into the hole and am very pleased with how stable it is now.

My other corals are doing quite well.

018-2.jpg

The second Acan Lord has continued to expand.

020-4.jpg

The brain coral must like this spot. It has continued to grow and every night it throws up a forest of tentacles.

And just for fun, a puppy picture:
003.jpg

She has learned to get up onto the couch. She has also found my chair but I hassle her until she gets out of that.

Hope you enjoyed the pics.

New corals look great! (Still jealous you are so close to Dr. Mac's, haha). Did you have any trouble mounting the black fuzzy one to the couch?

Tank is looking good. I like the natural look of the Halimeda.. Keep it up
The stuff grows all over my tank so it must like something about my setup. There are a bunch of different shapes and sizes. In addition to the Halimeda I have several other forms of algae growing in the tank. I figure if it gets too out of hand I can just pull any one type out and change the balance. I prefer to keep things in check rather than totally eliminate them. Although the red flatworms may get a chemical treatement before too long.

The black fuzzy one on the couch figured out she could jump. Like a little kid, she enjoys sticking her nose in things, chewing on anything, and getting dirty.

you have a ungodly amount of flatworms in there
The flatworms used to be in the sump and nowhere else. When my coris wrasse disappeared, they made it into the display. The last few days I have been sucking them out into a brine shrimp net but given the number, it will be a while before the numbers are noticably different. Eventually I will use flatworm exit on them and do them in once and for all. That will probubly be about the time I upgrade......so not any time soon.

RocketEngineer

Looking good man.

If you think that's a lot of flatworms you haven't seen anything. My 90g before I took it down had at least 10 times as many. Anywhere exposed to light was covered in a mat of flatworms. No more than an 1/8th" between them. Hence the reason for taking it down.
