RODI Shutoff valve

Came into work this morning to find the RODI waste water still running. Checked the barrel and it's full. I'm guessing the RODI shutoff valve isn't working and needs to be replaced. Is there anything else it could be? The one I have now is just under a year old.

Could it be something else?

Sounds like the check valve might have gotten stuck, if the actual shutoff valve/ solenoid went bad your barrel of product water would be overflowing I would imagine.

My barrel has a float valve on it. There is no output of filtered water that I can see, only the waste water seems to be running.

Exactly, that valve on you barrel puts back pressure on a check valve fitting that is separate from the solenoid "block" this causes pressure to build in the line that eventually activates the solenoid. If the check valve wasn't functioning properly, it would let the water past it, back into the membrane housing and out the waste water line, basically back flushing the membrane.

Again, I am not completely certain this is the exact problem, but it is a problem that I have experienced and the "symptoms" were exactly like yours.

Ok, so I should replace the float valve? The only true check valve I have is on the waste line to prevent backflow into the system from the sewer line (city regulations).

There should be a check valve fitting on the product water output side of your membrane housing, it will look like a regular fitting at a glance but if you take it off and look inside you will see the steel valve. That is that part that I am guessing is the root of your problem.

FYI: My on my Coralife RO this is builtin to the membrane housing. So you may not actually see the inline one.

Really? must be new, The older coralife units I have worked with, it is the Guest fitting that screws into the product output on the membrane housing, if this is the case that they are actually built in nowadays, then bravo to coralife's marketing tactic, I have never seen the shut off/ solenoid fail, but have seen my fair share of cases where the check valve starts failing on many different brands.

Just to clarify, I am talking about the check valve and not the auto-shutoff. that remains a separate square box. The unit is 5 years old.

This morning I did a close inspection and there is a check valve that is connected to the housing. I have ordered a new check valve, some other fittings,a new membrane and a new auto shut off valve for the future.

We had a contract for maintenance of everything, but last month they pulled out of it so I'm on my own and trying to figure this thing out. Thanks for your help.

I had this same problem.

Those elbow check valves can go bad. Mine did. I replaced the check valve and everything is fine.

One other thing you can do if for some reason you can't get this working, is to use a float switch and a normally closed solenoid installed on the supply line to the entire RO unit. Then you just install the float switch upside down under the float valve on the barrel. Then when the water level raises and the float switch engages, it will turn the power off to the solenoid, shutting off the water supply to the whole RO unit. Then when water is removed from the barrel, the flat switch will turn on the solenoid letting new water be made until the switch turns off again. The float valve will then be an emergency fail safe in case the switch or solenoid fails.
