rod's onyx clownfish update

Thanks for sharing this. I got a pair of clowns from christosclowns last year on May 20th. They were not even an inch in size, about only 45 days old and shipped up to NY and then brought into Canada with a bunch of other ones. That alone would stress the fish.

Like you, I used a little betta tank in my main one for the first six months or so while they sized up and ate. I have two other clowns in my tank to and I have been keeping notes on their development.

With two other larger clowns in the tank there is some aggression, but not much so I know that will knock them down a bit in development. However, what I have noticed with most people is the colors don''t seem to come in until the mid bar on the clowns are fully developed.

I am also interested to know, at what age is it that Rod and other breeders normally sell their young onyx? Any one have any ideas?

I ask, as my juvi's have the undertones to the onyx coloration. That grey orange hue to their skin. So I know it is there. I also just added a very small, and unfortunately bleached sebae anemone to the tank and placed it around where the young ones frequent. The smaller of the two often sleeps in it at night and I am going to watch to see if color development increases now that they have something to feel a little more protected in.

I thank you for sharing your experience as it has helped in my planning and timeline for my clowns development.

Please share more pics as yours continue to color up.

christosclowns "onyx" where just offspring from dark parents, that did not guarantee onyx. No C-quest lineage.

Rod's fish are far superior

I was very suspicious when I first purchased these fish as I kept hearing that some were hit and miss. The female has now developed a full black between the second and third stripe and the male is growing darker as well. I love that fact that I have had them from a roughly 1/2 inch size to what they are now. The transformation has been astounding.

Actually when I purchased them, he advertised they were offspring from Bill Addison who is associated with the C-quest line.

But I would have to agree, it seems Rod's are much more superior. It is too bad we Canadians cannot do better business with him.

But the onyx undertones are in the fish I have. It is just a matter of bringing it out in them, and there does appear to be a big difference in a clowns color or other development when they are in a tank by themselves and when sharing a tank with other clowns.

from what I've seen..the anemone has everything to do with coloration. Rarely do they develop their color in bubble tips. Some will say this is false, but I consider it a rarity. sebaes and carpets tend to bring out the color. Perhaps the more potent sting influences coloration.

It is a mystery, had 4 more from same clutch and they didn't color as fast. This pair has been with same RBTA for last 10 months. I think they are about a year old. Recently put in a yellow BTA and they won't go near it, worried they will loose color in new anemone.

BTAs and Onyx coloration.. From posts that I read its about 50-60% that lose coloration (or never color completely) In my personal experience, 75% held their dark coloration while in BTAs

update

Come over to the darkside.....

The female is now onyx...the male is getting there. Love these fish.

How old were they when you received them? 4-5 months? So, would they be close to 2 years old? I'm just trying to figure out how long it takes them to fully color up.

I'd say they were more like 1-2 months when I got them...they were super tiny like .75 inches.

so my fish have came a long way. Last night they spawned. Sorry for the bad picture, from 1gen iphone.
