Rod's Onyx Clowns

PA sells rod's, nice to see them selling some with 2 stripes. They are a healthy strain but hard to tell how they colorup. Maybe Rod is holding on to them longer now, heard a few issues with alot of DOA's. I ordered 2 shipments of 4 and 2 were dead within a few days. I have 4 in with a RBTA and 2 in another system without anemone. I will see if the coloring is hit and miss with each fish and diff in color hosting Rose. I never had that much color and have had them for 7 months.

I have 2 Rod's Onyx I ordered from PA. I've had them for about a month and a half. One is still very small but the other already has its tail strip coming in (probably about 1.25 inches). Both are in a breeder net. The larger of the two really gives the small one a hard time. I finally had two put a divider in the net to give the little guy a break.

My question is can I add the larger clown to my display and then add the little guy once he is large enough? I already have a RBTA in place for them to host in.

No because the other one will likely become female, if you could get the hard breeder things with the dividers , so they can see each other and get use to each other would be recommended. Its normal for the larger one to give the smaller one a hard time, would just separate them if the damage was really bad.

another thing you can try is putting some egg crate as a divider. IF the holes in the egg crate allow the small one to pass but not the larger one, this allows a little bit of socialization but yet still allows the little guy a safe place to go if he's getting beat up really bad.

There is no reason you can't add one then the other. The bigger one will become female if you add one now or later. I don't see the relevance. That being said I'd probably keep them in the breeder net and socialize them as recommended by Illidan.

Well I took the divider down for a little while again and the larger clown just ran the other all over the net. Wouldn't give the little guy much of a break so I put my foam divider back up. I may purchase Lee's five way breeder from Premium so at least they can see each other. I just don't see the larger fish letting up without seriously stressing the little guy out.

Honestly if it continues to be that bad they may never work out. You may be forced to get rid of the big aggressor and get a smaller more docile replacement. The problem with fish is they are individuals and they can defy typical social behavior. Its unfortunate but true. I hope it works for you. I'd keep doing what you are doing and keep trying. Changing habitat can inspire different reactions. You may find in the new breeder they are hunky dory. Good luck with them
