Rod's Onyx

what is the success rate of having these clowns host to an anemone??

I'm trying to scrounge up enough money to get a pair in the coming days and they will go into a 37 with a RBTA.

What is the adress to rod's reef? I live in chicagoland and will be going back to school at the university of iowa in a couple of weeks. I wanted to stop in and check it out. Knowing me, I will most likley leave with a fish, hopefully a picasso or snowflake? If not then an onyx will do just fine. Does anyone know if he has snowflakes? I've wanted one for the longest time. They are so hard to find, but when I do find them online they are outragously priced. Sorry for the long off topic post.

back to the point.

address to rod's reef.

Thanks.

From rod's site...
East/west toll-way (I-88). Exit Peace Road, which is the first DeKalb exit (about 22 miles past the Sugar Grove Exit). Turn Left n Peace Road until it dead ends into Gurler Road (about 1/2 mile). Turn Right on Gurler Road for about 1.5 miles and you'll come to a stop sign which is rte.23. Turn Left on rte. 23 for about 3 miles to 15100 rte 23.. On the left side of the road, you will see a bluish gray house with 2 buildings out back. I am in the smaller of the 2 buildings.

By the way, in my opinion, the onyx are much nicer than the picasso or snowflake. You can pick out a misbarred onyx for something even more unique...

ReeferMO85, Rod does not sell Picasso or Snowflake clowns. :)

If you really want snowflakes, Old Town Aquarium might still have a pair for $500.

On my last visit to Rods, I purchased five Onyx clowns, including two older "teenagers" and three younger mis-barred Onyx. They make a great family and cost far less than the other types you mentioned.

I would recommend calling Rod to disciss it with him. If you plan to visit his place, I always recommend calling before you visit, just to be sure he'll be there.

 SHLove16, Sorry for the giggle, but I'd not be interested in an Onyx clown that was black!

Here's the parents:

You'd have to call Rod directly to see what they've produced!

Have you ever seen them? I think the all-black ones with white stripes look good. The ones with orange like all of the pictures posted look really good as well, I was just curious because I don't know a lot about clownfish.

I know this is rod's onyx thread, but you guys all seem to know a lot about the more rare species of clowns, so... where is a good place to get snowflakes and picassos? And why are snowflakes so friggin exspensive? thanks.

Arn't onyx ocelleris too? Or are they percula?

No I wasn't really looking, just curious...and infact the more I've looked at these pictures the more I like these clowns the best. With the orange face and fins you can see more detail. Makes their faces more "cute".

Just read on another thread that Onyx=Percula...cool.
This may be false information, but I was told that Percula arn't as hardy as ocelleris, and that they are more aggresive...is this true?
If not, I think I may get a pair from Rod once I get my new reef aquarium set up...they really are gorgous!

SHLove16, I hope my previous answer didn't put you off. :)

I've found the Rods Onyx to be hardier than anything else in my reef. I had a few problems early on and they were troopers the whole time. It also has something to do with being born and raised in the aquarium, rather than WC (wild caught).

ReeferMO85, the Picassos and Snowflakes come from different places, so you'll need to search out local or online sources for them.

For Picassos, I would suggest locating a local ORA dealer, since it comes from there. Since they are fairly new and have good demand right now, the prices are a little elevated. You can visit ORA online at: http://www.orafarm.com/ordering.html.

For Snowflakes, I've been told that they come from England and are pretty rare. The reason for the high cost is "high demand and low supply". Since most dealers can eventually sell a pair for around $500, they see no reason to sell for less.

In both cases, there aren't secondary farm markets for them yet. If that happens in the future, the cost will likely drop.

Good hunting!

No no, don't worry, I was by no means offended. Haha, just curious.
Are the onyx more aggresive since they are true percula's though?
I really am intrested in getting a pair! I just hope he's still selling them by the time my tank is ready! (probably somewhere between 3-6 months)

what are the odds of somebody else breeding snows or picasso? are people trying right now? what would the parent breeders be for both varients? thanks.

 Based upon the quantity of young uns I saw when I was there a few weeks ago, he'll be selling them for a long time to come. Its so cool that every time I go, I get to see a new batch of babies.

While my Onyx aren't overly aggressive (mean), they certainly hold their own in a reef with tangs, angels and wrasses...

Boyd

ReeferMO85, Does that mean you are a gambler.... ;)

I think that there are a bunch of experienced clownfish owners/breeders that have bought picassos and/or snowflakes and are trying to do just that.

Since I've never been into breeding fish, I couldn't tell you whether they'll be successful. It'll greatly depend on whether the genes carry through to the offspring.

Boyd

hahah, yea, vegas has picassos go off at 9 to 1

I do hope someone figures it out soon and levels the market a little. $500 for 2 clownfish?!?! I don't think so, no matter how much I love em.

greed is the root of all evil.
