G13 - When you purchased your clowns from Rod were they the same size? and are they still the same size as each other?

I ask this because mine were purchased around June also of last year and when I purchased mine they were both the same size, but now the other one is twice the size if not a little more han the other.

that is supposed to happen. one is assuming the female role. she will always be at least twice as large as the male

Stykthyn- any updated pics of yours? yours are the same age as mine so I'd love to see how they are developing!

Here's mine I will have had 1 year in feb :)

well i like the look of a perfect onyx but i like the clowns no less just wish they would color together the same

Ah, okay....I was thinking that there might be some medical reason for the 3rd bar being absent that would worry you.

i wish i could get mine to eat more but it seems like they eat a lot for their size they do really well when i feed frozen cyclopeze they also seem to really like Rods Food
i asked my LFS to order it for me they now stock it and my reef club has a thread on the food all of the sudden

In Dec 04 I bought two babies from Ron. They both were starting to fill in the third stripe. By the next summer, both were fully black and the female was twice the size of the male. Somehow in Dec 05 I lost the male. I was so sad. In January I got another baby from Ron to replace him. He was even smaller than the first time (he hatched in Aug 05) and didn't even have his third stripe. It is now January 07 and he is just now filling in the third stripe! My theory is that the female has stunted his growth. LOL it may be another year before he fills in with black at this rate! I love my black onyx percs!

they are cute in the firts pic you can see where she will have a white stripe it is lighter orange there

Hi, guys! I have been trying to get a pair of black clowns for a long time now, (OK, I have only had my tank for about 3-4 months now) and I want them to be my main fish. I have a 24g Aquapod, and all it has is a high finned red banded shrimp goby and a pistol shrimp. Talk about a waste of space! I can't really afford 2 of Rod's onyx, especially after shipping, and got gift certs for my LFS. Would you recommend black false percs, or go with ORA blacks? I am picky, and don't want to settle for something I will not be happy with down the road. Or, so you think he would sell some to my LFS to resell? That would be amazing if he would, but I can see why he wouldn't want to..... What is the consensus here?

I'll agree about you with the new thread, but not necessarily does it mean that if someone cant afford ~$150 for two fish, doesn't mean that they cant afford a reef tank.

Personally I cant afford them right now, but I have a reef. Once I get the money, I am going to buy a pair.

And dont get me wrong. It is a perfect price for those type of fish.

Just my $.02

i mean that a reef tank cost lots of money and if you dont have the ability for whatever reason to buy them right now thats fine then you should at least be capable of saving your money enought to buy what you want for the tank. I waited about two months after i decided i wanted them before i ordered them and i spent most of the money i had at that point on them.
i just was trying to say what you so elegantly said, they are not overpriced they are fairly priced for a fish this nice.
sorry to be offensive i just think if ouspeedbump wants a pair of onyx for her main fish then they should save the cash and get the rodonyx since they are such nice fish

You didn't seem offensive, at least not to me. And it is true, I found out about these last month, fell in love with them. I probably wont get them until..... I dont know. Whenever I get 150.00. I mean LA.com is selling a pair for 200.00

EDIT: They were selling a pair for 200.00

Ok. So maybe not as good as rodonyx, but la.com does sell black onyx, you just need to catch it in the divers den. its there for about 5 hours max. before its sold
