Rod's Onyx

thanks guys. I really want them, so I am going to save up. I was just hoping that Rod might sell some to my lfs since I have over $100 in gift certs to there from Christmas and birthday..... I guess I didn't clarify that as I should have. Sorry for the confusion!

Rod probably would sell to your LFS if they ask him for a pair. The only problem then would be that your LFS will jack the price up another $100 to sell to you... so you'd still be paying $150 for a pair & they would have went in your LFS's crappy water.

& just an FYI, "black false percs & ORA blacks" are the same thing. ;)
If you like the look of an all black and white clown go with those...definatly cheaper! I personally like some orange in my clowns & therefor dont like black ocellaris.

I got 5 from Rod. That was the best of the five. I traded him and another one for two snowflakes. I am very happy with my trade because the three Onyx from rod is going to be just as nice.
I am looking for an Onyx that from a different line to breed with one of mine. Still looking.

the thing to do is get together with a few friends who wanted the samething and order them at the same time. You can save on shipping. Shipping cost is about 60 dollars, spread it over 6 fish, only 10 each. (plus the cost of the fish of course)

What is the difference in Rods onyx and why are they so expensive? I just bought a pair of onyx babies for $30 and a pair of black and white occellaris for $50. Do his onyx have different coloration than most? Mine are babies, but someone in our club bought some previously and they are already colored up like normal onyx. Just wondering why his are so expensive. The top pic is the onyx babies. Thanks

about 95% of rods fish color up to be onyx, which is fairly high. his animals are always available and come from great stock. buying solomons or P.N.G clowns online is like a crapshoot. you may or may not get the animal you want, they aren't available all the time, and they are loaded with parasites and disease. with Rod it is practically guaranteed to get the animal you want that is already healthy, eating dry food, and will color up to be a full onyx.worth every penny to me.

I own a total of eight Onyx clowns from Rod, but I never thought of them as expensive. I've bought them on three separate occasions and all have colored up very nicely. They also eat whatever we feed, although we like give them Rods Food at least twice a week.

Its great that you've been able to get Onyx for such a low price. I hope they do well for you. :)

Rods Onyx are better in many ways.
1. the parents breed true.
- many people with WC onyx that raise fry notice that alot of the babies dont develop the onyx colors all the way. 90-95% of rods do!

2. Richer orange color.
- The babies posted above are a good example... normal clown orange color. Rods babies are a very vibrant orange!

3. The amount of black Rods onxy get.
- I've seen MAYBE half a dozen onyx clowns with black dorsals that did NOT come from rods clowns. Rods clowns have black dorsals and really thick area's of black compaired to thin amounts of black on alot of other onyx.

4. again looking at the other juvi's posted above (sorry, I'm not picking on you! they are cute little clowns! just a clear example) Rods clowns already have black between the first and second bar's even before the second bar is filled in all the way. The clowns posted above dont even have a hint of black at this age.

Personally I dont think rod charges to much for his clowns at all. It costs alot of money to raise fry not to mention SOOO many hours of labor and love.

i bought mine at 3/4 and they allready had tons of black on them if you look at the onyx turnermnk posted they are like a light orange with no black at that size my Rodonyx were much blacker they have much stronger genes it seems
i think rods clowns are a steal compare them to stuff from ORA and they are not close

hey Tony i watch your video all the time please dont take it off photobucket when people want to know what mine will look like when they grow up its your pics and video that i go to thanks for taking all those shots for us

My clowns are only between 1/2"and 3/4" long, I've never seen a clown getting major coloring that early and I have 5 pairs. I agree with the post above, I just can't see the justification for the price he charges, I'll see if I can get that guy in my club to send me his pics so I can post them, they look exactly like rods onyx. I think they just got hyped up like a lot of the corals do, acans and micros for ex., then they charge outrageous prices for the stuff. For example I have the acan lord that sells on thecaptivereef for $99 a head, I propagate my 150 head colony regularly and from a half head frag, have a 3-5 head frag in 3 months or less. So imagine how many frags they are producing. I just sold a 10 head frag for $30. I'm sorry to all you hard core believers, I just can't see the justification. My pic may look bad, its the camera operator, not the fish.

Turnermnk, i'd have to disagree, your pic may be bad, but the other photo is them after being shipped and in a plastic bag and you can still see a MAJOR differance...

Yeah, but yours could be a month or two older than mine, you can't judge size from two pics at different depths, I'll keep posting pics as they age. You may be right, I was just wandering the justification.

I understand your point, but I have seen these lil guys from when they are still eggs.....and they color up VERY quickly....i have yet to see so called other "onyx" clowns come close to the jet black and vibrant orange that rod's produce....

The colors are enhanced because of the food they are given. Thats not genetics.
Feeding cyclopeeze alone will bring out these vibrant colors. And we all know Rod is marketing a special food which contains cyclopeeze.
