Rod's Onyx

with juvenile clowns, anything they host initially can cause a change in body color, esp the black that we all seek. i believe its a process of the clowns "slime coat" getting use to the stinking cells of its host. this is more apparent with juvenile clowns since there skin is still developing. you see this less often with adults as they have "grown" into there skin. there body shapes are amazing, i trait of rods clowns that many over look.

I don't have much experience in clowns so do you know if the juvi will ever develop the color while in the BTA?
 
My other hobby is photography. :D
It takes lots of practice.

Huey, mine were darker for the first year in the frogspawn until i put them with the RBTA, they are back in a frogspawn now, do you think adding a Crispa or Carpet would help get the black dorsal back? it has not completely faded but is lighter than the rest of the black.

what i do know is rods clowns have a very strong, reliable black in them, and i personaly would let them in the bta. your first concern should be there happiness. color is secondary. my gut feeling is that in time they will get their color back, just have to be paitent. focus on their health, growth and the other variables you want should follow in time.

Thanks, I have put the clowns back into the display tank with their anemone. Had to do a water change this morning and the fuge is where I withdraw water and add water.
How old are the clown for them to develop full color?

Got my Rod's in the middle of september and they were about a half inch. they are coming along nicely although i am concerned about the female "turning onyx". As you can see the male is coloring up nicely but the female has her 3rd stripe 95% complete (this pic is 3 wks old) and has no black between the 2nd and 3rd bars yet and none on the dorsal. Worried she may end up looking like a true perc and while i care mostly that she is healthy i would have bought a true perc if i wanted a true perc! Can anyone chime in with similar experiences/advice/opinions? thanks!

My rod's clowns are about 2.5 years old and they have not onyxed. I have no anemone and my male looks like your female.

what kind of lighting are they under?
 
i hate this forum now .... i wish rod was selling these again i set up a tank just for these guys and the week i get it he stops selling to the public ......
 
You can get them from Premium Aquatics.com. Look at the livestock list and then for tank bred/raised fish. Looking to get a pair in the next few months myself.

I picked up 4 today, small some with 1 stripe and some with the second coming in. They all took to RBTA after and hr. Surprisengly they paire off. Not sure if it will stay that way but a pair in each Rose.
