Rod's Onyx

Tony got an updated pic of yours? :D Also anyone know what happened to GSM Guy?

I don't have any good ones right now.... :(

I'm hoping to get a pair of babies this week. I don't have an anemone yet, but I'm hoping they will host in my Hammer for now.

I was checking out the premium aquatics Rod onyx percs and they say they are shipped 1/4" to 1/2" long. Why on earth are they selling these fish that small?

It is my understanding that the shipping survival rate is MUCH better when they are small... smaller lungs = using less oxygen.

I got mine from premium aquatics, and they came in swimming and very happy. can't wait for them to color up

I received a PM earlier this evening that my post was incorrect...

"your comment regarding the survival of small fish is absolutely wrong.

they are MUCH MORE likey do NOT survive shipment when they are survive. whoever told you this is completely ignorant."

So, I figured that I should clarify that I was simply stating what my understanding was. I'm not saying that I'm right or wrong, but I do believe that Rod knows what he's talking about since he has had plenty of experience in shipping his clowns.

Please refer to page 2 of this thread (roughly 3/4 of the way down)...

My rod juvi's are in a seperate tank right now until I put them in the DT. I have 2 bubble tips, and I fear that their color will fade in the bubble tips. Will a carpet anemone keep their black nice and black, if so I will take out the bubbles and introduce a carpet before I put them in the DT.

They may use less oxygen (obviously) but when something goes wrong ie:shipping mistakes / temperature fluctuations and the oxygen level drops the little ones are the first to die. Larger clowns are better equipped to deal with adversity.

your post doesnt add up..

oxygen level drops the little ones are the first to die.

They may use less oxygen (obviously)

So, why would the little ones be the first to drop if the o2 drops and they need less o2.

What makes a larger clown better at dealing with the adversity? ( I have asked you this a few times)

Just because another vendor shipped a few clowns that didnt turn out so well, you look at those few losses, but neglect to look at the thousands shipped with less than 1% fatalities.

This is an argument that would be very hard to quantify. What is the percentage of babies that survive shipping verses adults? I don't know of a study that answers this question. There are factors that would be in the favor of adults (temperature changes), and there are factors that would be in the favor of juveniles (O2/CO2, fish to water volume ratio) The fact is that no one will be able to prove their point in such an argument.

Fellas,
How about some pics of the clown?

"your post doesnt add up.."

Yes it does

"So, why would the little ones be the first to drop if the o2 drops and they need less o2."

Because they are young and fragile. I've seen on more than one occasion in my own breeding experience that if the O2 drops the little ones die first. (in fw and sw)

"What makes a larger clown better at dealing with the adversity? ( I have asked you this a few times)"

What makes adults better at dealing with adversity over babies in people? We are stronger and have more immunities. The flu may make us stay off work for a day or 2 but it could potentially kill the very young or very old. Its the same thing.

"Just because another vendor shipped a few clowns that didnt turn out so well, you look at those few losses, but neglect to look at the thousands shipped with less than 1% fatalities."

I don't have access to all the ones that shipped well. I just hear the stories of deaths from clowns that are too small to start with. Not just your Onyx. Many Picasso / Snowflakes are shipped too small IMO as well.

Again this is my opinion and I'm entitled to it. If you agree or not is irrelevant to me. You could ship larvae to someone as well it doesn't mean you should.

Those fish and those pictures are beautiful Nick. I wish I could take pictures like that.

I know right? They look like they're ready for a black tie affair with their little black and whit suites on.

will a carpet anemone influence more black in the clownfish? or will keeping them away from an anemone influence more black? I'm introducing them into the main tank in the near future and want to know
