RODSTAR'S REEF ROOM - 561G Display Tank

So do you have a new date and time for the display to be moved? I am local and can help.

I do not have a new move date planned.

Right now, I am thinking about waiting until early September.

I want to get all the plumbing done and baffles in before I move the place the big tank.

That will allow me to test the plumbing on everything else and have room to move around just in case I have to change some configurations.

Oh, a couple more related items.

1. A big thanks the Delaware Valley Reef Club for the suction cups. They are a huge help!

2. I am becoming a fan of the Korallen-Zucht Flatworm Stop. My SPS has stopped receding as far as I can tell. But, even better, the healthy SPS looks fantastic. I don't think I have ever seen my GARF Bonsai look so purple and the green polyps are vibrant and fully extended!!!
I love the FW stop!!!!
I am worry free of any more of those evil pests!
Is the tank still outside?

Not much to update right now. I am busy turning myself purple with the pvc plumbing work.

Of course, "the best laid plans of mice and men..."

the plumbing was so neat in my head, all against the wall, nicely braced, parallel pipes.

The reality is that it will end up being a mess of spaghetti! Luckily I am trying to overdo it on union ball valves. Because I am sure that something will go wrong.

It's amazing. I literally have over 100 plumbing parts and pipes sitting here and I still need to go to Home Depot or Lowes....

arghhhh

Lowes in Dtown has a great plumbing selection.
I made about ten trips and I prolly have $200 of fittings that I didn't use. I just kept grabbing different fittings just so that I wouldn't have to keep going back. Lol. I kept my receipts though and intend to return a lot of the ones I didnt use.

Time for a bit of an update. I have been taking this part extra slow because i think the plumbing is the most tricky. And, so far, I was right.

The way room and the tanks are laid out is the following (and you can see it in the pictures.

Front: Sump (72x24x24) in stand
Left Side: Refugium (48x18x24) on a stand (1 inch drain, 1 inch return)
Right Side: Eel Tank (48x24x24) on a stand (2 1.5 inch drains, 1 inch return over the top and split.
Center: Frag tank (72x24x12) on a low stand (2 1.5 inch drains, 1 inch return split)

So , here is how the plumbing works that I have done to date keeping in mind that te display tank is still in the backyard:

Sump to display (1/3 plumbed) goes through a Super Dart Gold and T's (will go up and down the front and back of the tank with multiple outputs (locline))

Sump to other tanks: Through a Super Dart Gold, splits 3 ways into each tank

Sump to skimmer: Though a MD100 to skimmer and back

Returns all go to one end of the sump.

So, I got the majority of that plumbed last week. Then I started preparing the baffles. Remember all the drain lines will go into the right of the sump and flow to the left where the return pumps are.

So, I built three baffles to handle the bubbles.

And it was time to do a leak test. I should mention that in the back corner of the room I have a 135g water holding tank that has a MD70 on it that will pump water through itself (for salt mixing) or T off and dump into the sump.

So, I mixed up salt water (about 125g) overnight and then redirected the water into the sump!!!! Hurray!!! Everything is getting wet finally!

And then my first baffle blew the seam and knocked out the middle baffle!!!! ARGHHHH. No big deal though. Time to test the rest of the plumbing.

So, I fired up the first pump to fill the refugium. And, I had water everywhere!! Turns out I didn't tighten one of the bulkheads. Okay, easy enough.

Then to fire up the eel tank (which was already full of water because it was cooking my rock. Well, I discovered 2 new leaks. I am really good at making leaks.

So, everything got shut down, the remaining water in the sump was pumped into the refugium since it needs to be filled anyway. I let the sump dry out and ripped out the baffles.

I used the wrong silicon sealant for one. So, I switched to silicone II. I used a lot more. And, I also built additional braces on the baffles.

Tonight I test again!!!! IF all goes well, I can huddle up soem guys and attempt the tank move next weekend.

And, as a payoff for reading all of that, I leave you with some updated pictures!

looks like you have been really busy!!!! Question about the sump....what made you decide to go with a glass sump over acrylic? I've heard some people say they dont like using glass for larger sumps because of the pressure on the glass around the bulkheads sometimes causes the glass to crack over time. Im asking because I want to upgrade my sump and on my system and the prices I am getting on acrylic sumps is crazy. I havent been able to find anything online about the negatives of using a glass tanks for the sump. I can build a nice sump out of a glass tank for a fraction of what I will have to spend on acrylic.

Okay Derek you have more valves then my new house! OMG:uhoh3:
You should have at least let your kids use the new tank as a pool after this long hot summer!
Please let me know when your going to fill the tank. I want to water my lawn well the day before. Remember the east coast has a drought warning in effect!

As far as a glass sump.
I have 2- 50 gallon glass breeder tanks and a 40 gallon breeder.

no problems with cracks. They are a few years old.

I think you answered your own question. Cost. I priced an acrylic tank (that better met my preferred dimensions, but it was over $1200. Then I went to That Fish Place and picked up a 180g tank for less than $500 and drilled it myself. Is it a little bigger than I wanted? Yep, but there is no comparison to the cost of the acrylic.

And, I have not heard that about glass sumps, though it does sound somewhat logical. If the water in the tank is balanced correctly, the pressure shouldn't be too bad.

Yeah, I went a bit overboard. I wanted to actually do more true union valves, I was originally planning some sort of union every 6 feet so I could easily pull pieces and make adjustments. But, in the end I didn't because of expense and laziness. It will be just as easy to cut the pipe and replace it if need be.

I plan on adding some more water tomorrow. And, then its all about the big tank.

No new pictures to post yet, but I am planning to move the tank in this Saturday at 11am.

If there are reefers in the Philly suburbs who want to help, I would greatly appreciate it!!!

If I could, I would jump in a plane and come over there to give you a hand.
Oh, I am soooo envious.........

Very nice sir, very nice indeed:thumbsup:

Pictures are still in the camera, but the tank is in place! And the lights are hung!

Now, more plumbing. I hate plumbing...

Will post pictures as soon as I can

Thanks again to everyone for helping with the move!!!! It looks great in place. Lights are hung, return plumbing complete, sand in. I have some more pictures to post but they are on my other camera

Just have to plumb the drain lines and add the rock and then it will be time to fire it up!!!!

I plan to layout my aquascape tomorrow and add water this weekend!!!!

Though I still have to finish the drains on the tank (the returns are done)

Pictures coming tonight.
