The purpose of the pulse is to send a surge of water coliding with slower water and the collision creates a broader wave. The pulse interval sounds good. This pattern gives the greatest turbulence and alternates the flow enough to keep things suspended.
It might but I am frankly surprised that the other way wasn't a bit much at times. I think this will work but feel free to try a few things and do what works for you. As long as the whole tank is moving and the flow is random enough to prevent detritus piles from forming your in good shape.
I generally would recommend disconnecting power before changing modes. It is highly unlikely it would damage the unit but sometimes the program doesn't work right or hangs up. Disconnecting power usually fixes this.
