Rogger, I missed the presentation u did a while back on how to make your own food. I was wondering if u had a particular recipe that you use? I want to get away from using cubes from the store. Thanks again

If i recall correctly, it was primarly chopped up shrimp, squid, scallops,(might be some othe shellfish), minced garlic and selcon. thet exact proportion was not really specified. Rogger said he preferred not to use fish, I believe he did not use fish because they where oily.

In addition he said you could use gelatin as a binder, but this was personal preference as some people don't like using it because it is from cows a land based animal.

Chop up these items place them in a ziploc bag. then flatten out the ziploc bag and freeze. It turns out like a big frozen pancake that way you can break little pieces off as they are needed.

You really have a lot of flexibility in making your food. I think Roger said he has used fish, he just recomends avoiding oily ones.

I'm mixing up another batch of my own recipe this weekend. Here's what I used last time. To some extend, I just pick the seafood based on what's available or on relatively cheap.

Here's what we used last time:
1/2 lb. cleaned squid
1/2 lb. fresh shrimp
1/3 lb. sea scallops
2 mahi fillets (~1/2 lb.)
1 bag of nori (5 - 8" squares)
3/4 bar cyclopeeze (frozen)
1 pack of pacifica plankton cubes (extra from the freezer)
Selcon
fresh garlic cloves
a little RO/DI water (to help blend)

We blend the items individually in a food processor, then mix them together in a big bowl. The nori was soaked in water first to soften it. The final mush was scooped into 6 gallon size freezer bags, squished flat, and frozen. We last made food back in August, so this amount goes a long way.

On that size batch, last time I think we used most of the cloves from a garlic bulb, and probably 25-30mL of selcon (maybe 1/2 the small bottle). We tend to use the "yeah, that looks good enough" method of measuring. :D

thanks....trying to gather info.
I will probably be creating some next weekend
when my food processor comes in.

I feed twice a day 1 mysis and one either cyclope or prime reef and a sheet of nori for the tangs

regular lettuce in my case- I mean Romaine
I have a little eheim auto feeder feeds some dry spectrum twice a day not much just enuff that it disappears in about 15 secs.

Armando, The recipe that Jeff does is pretty similar to what I would do, however, I do not put
Nori, the reason is that I feed more nori to my tangs on a regular basis and IMO my tangs rather take the nori from the clip than free floating one.
I also avoid blending but rather give it a good dice cut with a knive, I find that some of the ingredients get liquify and basically disolve, I have notice that when I've done a batch in the food processor it clouds the water as it defrost, in the other way it stays in a more solid state allowing the fishes to pick out the pieces as it get defrosted w/o any clouding of the water.
Sorry is taking me so long to answer but I have been working Mad!
Hope this helped
