Rome Wasn't Build In a Day .... but you should see what "Ghengis-Prawn" can do.

First of all, a bit of background on my tank. I have ten gallon aquarium with about 4 inches of argonite (sp?) on the bottom. One big ten pound chunk of live rock to the right side, leaving just over 1/3 of the size open area (no plants or corral aside from what is living on the surface of the rock). The live rock has a large cavern under it with several access points (openings) through which Ghengis comes and goes.

Two days ago I placed a handful of polished stones (amethyst, quartz, tiger eyes) and a bunch of uglier run of the mill rocks in my aquarium in the open area on the left. They were generally sized from about a grape on up to a small orange, and various shapes to boot (flat ones, round ones etc).

When I returned the next morning, Ghengis-Prawn had taken all of the stones into the cavern, and used to cotruct what I can only describe as being a "wall". It was meticulously done, and very, very sturdy (i.e he moves around a lot over and in and around the wall but it never moves or erodes).

It is the most amazing thing.

So the day after, I tossed in another handful, again leaving them on the open area on the left. Again, Ghengis-Prawn managed to incorporate them into his "house".

So is there a question or point to this --yes. Ghengis is very outgoing, as far as I can tell, he seems to like to parade around in front of me, will eat right off my "feeding stick" (wood dowel with sclip on end for holding food), and is NOT SHY AT ALL, but for some reason he only does his building when nobody is around (i.e. I can stay up all night watching him but he won't move any rocks, but when I finally give up watching and leave, he will then go nutz and do some serious construction).

Has anyone else noticed this? Why is he (or they) so reluctant to have anyone (thing) see them build? Is this a territory thing?

At any rate, seeing the stuff he builds is a miracle in intelf, I would just love to see how he manipulates some of those large rocks (some of them I would not have belived he could move at all!).

Sorry about the long message .... I am just quite amazed!!

Regards,
JJ.

That's awesome. Before mine was large enough to kill snails and hermits, he would arrange them around his door to tighten up the entrance. Imagine his frustration when he finished and all the critters got up and moved away. After several failed attempts to keep them in place, he quit. A few months later, he killed them all anyway :)

I used to wrestle the nassarius snail away from him for fun sometimes. He would carry it around like a football, and I would poke at the snail with a stick to cause him to "fumble". Then I'd push the snail to the other end while he pounded on the stick and tried to recover. Most of the time, he worked around it and snagged the snail again.

Co-workers of mine say he acts like a dog instead of a "shrimp thing" as they say.

Now if only either one of you could get a video camera and post their behavior here. that would be awesome to see.
Just my 2 cents
