Ron's 210 Gallon Starphire Build

My wife and I started in this hobby a year ago with a 100 gallon "complete setup" that we got locally. It was basically set up as a freshwater tank with saltwater in it. We didn't really know the difference, and through a series of upgrades, wound up with a 240 gallon and 100 gallon acrylic tank and a 125 gallon glass "frag tank" that wound up somehow being another reef.

The problem with trying to maintain two or even three systems is that even something as simple as an auto top off gets very expensive when multiplied by two or three. The intent is to sell all of the extra lighting, skimmers, pumps, tanks and equipment after getting a single tank set up and running.

After some consideration of where to put the tank and what type of tank we would prefer, we have concluded that a peninsula tank would allow us to have both sides viewable and effectively be twice as long. I love the look of the Starphire tanks that I have seen and I'm very tired of acrylic scratches. In order to go behind the couch in the living room, we are limited to 6 feet in length. 30 inches in width is adequate and we don't want more than 24 inches in depth because we would like to use 250W Metal Halides instead of 400W bulbs.

As it turns out, someone who literally lives in our neighborhood was selling exactly the tank we wanted, only it was drilled on both ends for closed loop and had a few chips in one of the glass panels. It's now back at the builder's for resealing and to have the drilled end and chipped panels replaced!

The first pictures!

I haven't decided whether to go with a closed loop or use my Tunze 6100's yet. I'm leaning towards using a total of 4 Tunze's with two on at a time and switching between a gyre and reverse gyre. I'm also considering switching between the two closed loop inputs with a controlled ball valve and trying to accomplish the same effect that way. I have a ReeFlo Barracuda and three of the four Tunzes, so I'll be able to do some testing once I get everything set up and decide between the solutions.

The tank also came with a nice sump, a stand that I'm going to investigate reskinning and a pair of 20" Lumenarcs. I'm also going to do some testing with the Lumenarcs to see if I can cover the tank with two 250W 20K Radiums on a Galaxy E-Ballast. I'm a big fan of VHO Superactinics and would like to design a slick looking well ventilated hanging fixture to hold the Lumenarcs and the VHO's.

There is a lot left to figure out, but I can't wait to get started!

Anyone put a chiller in the attic? I'm actually wondering what else I could put in the attic. I could easily make an access panel so I could check on anything up there. I could build a nice platform for everything to sit on up there. I want to heat from the chiller to not go into the house. I'd also like to be isolated from the noise.

A closed loop pump would have to be under the stand in order to prime, but I could easily run the chiller off my return pump and still be able to pump the water 8' up to the attic without any problems.

I'm intrigued by the idea of a surge tank enough to try it at some point. That would also be something I would want to put up in the attic.

The skimmer needs to be cleaned to frequently to want to not have in the stand.

I'm planning on building an acrylic box into the bottom of the stand to catch any spills, I could build one of those in the attic, also.

I'll get pictures of the stand that came with the tank. My current plan is to use it as the starting point for the new stand.

Thoughts?

I've decided I'll be able to do the skimmer, chiller, fuge, mixing tank and water change chamber in the garage. I have water and sewer access there, so water changes will be easy. I'm trying to decide if I can do a frag tank out there, too, or if the temp swing will be too great.

Nice Tank Ron! Gotta love the clarity of starphire glass. I feel your pain with acrylic tanks. i'll be watching your build closely as I have to move my 180 into our entertainment niche. (wife's orders. she wants her family room back). Good luck!

I've got a couple of updates. I stopped by the builder's today with BammBamm along for the ride. We looked at the tank for a while and figured this out:

I've got to get some 3D modeling software..

I ordered the additional holes drilled through the braces. The two holes for the closed loop intakes are already in place, so I'll just plumb them together for the intake. I'll switch between the two colors for closed loop return flow. It'll be interesting to see if I still need my Tunze's.

It has also been pointed out that I need to route the over-the-tank plumbing high to avoid UV from the Metal Halides.

I also have a plan for the stand. I'm going to get it framed and painted so that when the tank arrives I can get it on the stand and skin the stand with the tank on it.

Bamm Bamm came over today and after a brief detour to a couple of LFS's, we came home, acclimated a new CBB (the first of two I'm going to work on training) to my fuge for dietetic training, and began work on the frame for the new stand. The stand that came with the tank is not the ideal height, and I got a great design from someone else's build thread that I've been working on modifying to meet my needs. I'm going to assemble the main stand frame and add the part that will come up over the end of the tank with the overflow and returns later.

On with the pictures!

First, all great things happen when this man is around to help:

We needed to build 6 of these notched 4x4's for the stand design:

Here's a closeup of our notching work:

First, our test! We placed all of the boards with no nails, screws, glue or anything. Amazingly it stood on its own:

Assembly time:

And.. all together now!

I'm really pleased with how the corners turned out:

I'm working on priming the stand, now! Then the top and bottom gone after priming and painting. Everything gloss white for waterproofing. The entire thing will be skinned later, of course. The plan is to set it up and then skin it in place.

Nice Job on the stand!

How much for you two to build me a stand for a 180? Seriously!

I'll even lend a hand. PM me and let me know.

hmmmm...=)I could use some extra cash... There's this Sohal Tang I've had my eye on at the LFS...

Nice work! Look forward to see where this thread goes! I wish I had the time to do my own build thread. I really don't think I could keep up! Good Job..

How about some shots of the corals I'm staging to go in?
