Rotating sprinkler heads for water movement DIY

That is a great idea man. HMMM wish that I had seen this before I redid my plumbing on my tank a month ago. Just wasn't happy with the spray bar getting clogged up every other week. Do you have 4 on your 400? or your old tank. I have a 75, could I get away with 2? Thanks

I had 6 on my 190 and now have 8 total on two differnt pumps on the 400. I'd go with at least 2, maybe 4 and put one in each corner. It all depends on what pump you want to use and if you are going closed loop or return from a sump. Closed loop, do what ever you want. Sump return, what ever your overflow can handle.

As far as flow, how much can you push? These things can flow a lot. As I said, I had 6 on a mag 36 and I know they could have flowed more. I know it states it on the sprinkler but I don't remember what it was. Again, it was based on pressure from the system but that was to overcome the back siphon vavle which I removed with the spring and filter. The MAG 36 would not overcome it with 6 on the line.

I'm going to be steping up to a Iwaki 70 or 100 or something similar as return pumps. My overflow has a 2" drain so I think it will handle it.

I'd like to see these things hooked up to your pump and return plumbing outside just shooting into the air to visualize the flow.

The other sprinkler thread led me to believe that the flow was restricted by the gears used to turn them, and the small opening at the tip that "throws" the water, too much to make this worth while.

How do you respond?

thanks!

Sorry but I don't have any pics like that. Guess I should have taken some when I was testing my 190 to see how it would flow. By setting up these liek I have, you get a wider flow that will still shoot out at least 6', that's how long my tank was.

If you look at the actual nozzle in the thing, the hole is rather large. The screw is used to make the hole smaller, thus like putting your finger over the end of a water hose, will make it squirt out farther. These things when used as originally designed can shoot 45 feet.

The gears inside of them are basically the same as used in a SCWD. I've seen the insides of both and that's probably where the SCWD manufacture got the idea from, it's not a new technology. Also the specs on the side show that the more pressure you put on them, the more water they will flow.

Go to HD and spend the 10 bucks to try one and then let me know if you don't think it's worth it. If it dosen't work for you, then just put it in your lawn sprinkler system, no big loss then. ;)

Just wondering how big those sprinklers are? I like the idea but I don't have much vertical room under my canopy and I hate to have things intruding into my tank.

I think they are about 4" long. I can measure them when I get home. Also, you CAN stick more of them down in the tank, it's just that you would see them. ;)

I just went to HD in WI. They dont carry them and cannot order them. They basically told me I was crazy to think they could.

Talk to the manager, I've heard that they are good about ordering stuff. Atleast that is what I have heard from fellow reefers when it came to them ordering southdown.

Try some of the other stores or look on line. I looked at Lowes when I was there and they don't carry that brand but one in your area might. Also HD out here on the left coast will not carry or order southdown, even though they carry it on the east coast. I tried like hell to get a few pallets in and no go.

I'd go for two, one at either end and bump up the flow to 1000gph if you can. If not, then 600 should work. All you can do is try it and see what works best for you setup, but 2 would be a lot better.

That's funny, they say it's a pop up sprinkler but the ones I got are not and they look a bit different even though they are the same model, K8000. Also the ones I have are about 4-5" long.

Yea, but the discription sounds like they are both pop ups. Wonder if they discontinued making these. Also the cost on the website is more than at HD.

If your going to order them, I'd call first and make sure you are getting the right ones. Good luck.
