Rotifers

Well I combined my cultures into a ten gallon tank. The buckets weren't cutting it. It can be difficult to see the clarity of the water with them.

What I'm having trouble with is knowing whether or not I am actually harvesting anything. I use a 53um sieve and rinse it through with tank water, but I can't tell if I'm actually pulling up rotifers or not.

I just got my kids microscope from them. I'll look tonight to see them. It's a toy microscope, but still, better than the naked eye.

OK, nobody reported back to this: Reefstew, how did the bucket with the air stone work out for you?

It looked good for 1 week & I went back to slow air. You get to much algae in the water column with high air. BTW I will be speaking at the local fish club in Tucson on the Jan. meeting.

Cool, Id love to come. Can you give me some details? Im not familiar with the club you speak of. Thanks

Had an interesting thought last night. One of those, the answers been in front of my face many time "duh" sort of moments. Any time I've had to pull a batch of eggs early and incubate in a hatching tank, I've also gone ahead and inoculated the tank with rots to get a jump on food being in the tank when the eggs hatch. Naturally, there's strong aeration for incubating the eggs. Despite that aeration, or perhaps because of it, there has always been a strong rot population by the time of the hatch.

Can you post a picture, or PM me a picture of your incubation tank showing what you use for aeration? I am trying to find a better way to aerate the eggs after I pull a pot. Thanks

I recently moved and had to take down my cultures and breeding set up. So I can't take any photo's :( However, basically it's setting the air to a nice rolling boil. I'll go over my photo's later and see if I have any old ones I can post.
