Royal-Exclusiv / Vertex Cone Skimmer Club

@ricwilli - If you're going to 400+ gallons then it might be worth it. Having said that, I'm running my 250 on a 450g heavily stocked with flying colors!

@layer3switchguy, stick with the 170, it will handle your system and then some - heavily loaded.

Jeremy, I'm thinking of trying out biopellets. Do you see any issue with plumbing the output of the biopellet reactor directly into an Alpha 250 via the ozone nozzle?

Has anyone who has tried or is still running biopellets plumbed the output directly into their Alpha skimmers?

Thanks.

@reef_enthusiast, you could try it, however I think it's going to draw such a small amount of water that you really wouldn't see any difference. You'd be better off just dumping the outflow of the biopellet reactor right into the sump in front of the inlet of your Alpha pump.

Hey Jeremy: I am planning for a 225g with about a 50g sump. Would the alpha 200 be sufficient or would you recommend the 250. It will be mostly sps and a few big tangs.

Hi everyone.
I think I joined the club. I was looking for this skimmer few months and finally got it.
I'm very happy with the performance so far.
The Red Dragon pump is the smoothest and quietest pump I've ever had. Pump is completely silent.

System:
150G DT and 50G Sump, reef mixed, med bioload.

Simmer settings:
1. It is running at 10"
2. Wedge pipe close 60%
3. Venturi - out 2 turns

Important:
The Footprint is exactly 10" x 15 3/4" NOT 10" x 18". It was very important to me because I have limited space in my sump.

Supermarin 300

Supermarin 300

Hello,
I'm new to the club and I have a question. I have a 375 gal tank with a 75 gal sump. The tank has live rock and is in it's first week of cycling. I purchased everything used, so I thought I could get the skimmer home and plug it in and all would be good. Not the case. The water level is 9 inches high where the skimmer is in the sump. The telescope tube is in the lowest position and I see no difference which way I turn it. Here is my question, how do I change the amount of water that goes into the skimmer? I've adjusted what seems to be every tube or knob with no change. I purchased this used with the tank and I saw the skimmer working just fine until I got it to my house. What can I do?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Personally, I disagree with Klaus on this one. The 300 has way too big of a neck to run correctly off one pump in my opinion. However, you know what they say about opinions! ;)

Jeremy, for what it is worth I'd say you are right about it being a matter of opinion. If have run my 300 with one RD at times. It really comes down to water level. My skimmer sits in its own tank which I have the abilitly to easily adjust the water level within. It has been quite a while so I don't remember how much higher the level was but it did pull skimate.
I don't think I would list this as a selling point however as it seemed quite difficult to keep it running without constant adjustments.
Two pumps works better, you just seems to stall out on production every so often. This isn't what I had expected at the time, I thought it would be the other way around.

Does anyone with a 300 not need to make adjustments to the stand pipe every week or two or is that just me. :hmm6:

I do find this a bit of a let down myself for what is very nicely made bit of kit.
Running the red pipes BTW, the adjustable units did not exist when I bought in.

Did the skimmer come with the dials?
Mine does not have that????
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
No, I did this by myself. It's prototype/new and very useful for me.
I have more control and I can do more precision regulation.
I know exactly, how much is close/open the wedge pipe.
It's skimming better.

Hey Jeremy,
I'm looking to purchase a Alpha 170 soon. Has the red dragon pump issue been resolved? rust.
Thanks
Craig

There has never been a rust issue with them. The first 20 or so 170's that shipped out a couple years ago had the wrong size impeller and inlet/outlet. That was resolved immediately and everything has been great since then.

So is this skimmer pretty consistant? I just ordered one on Friday and after reading people are saying the neck is to large for the pump? It will on a 90g Sps tank and wondering if it will be to large.
