Royal gramma tank mates?

We have a 29 gallon and would like to get a royal Gramma, what other types of fish would go good with this fish?

Grammas are not aggresive unless they are threatened. You'll see him open his mouth in a defensive gesture. Otherwise, they are peaceful and tend to be solitary. JME

how are you supporting the mandarine fish--without a dedicated refugium for producing copopods it will starve to death?

as far as getting along with the grammas--no problems they both are peaceful

in case you have been missed

[welcome]

I think you might want do a bit of reading regarding the mandarin fish. They typically need a larger tank with a lot of established live rock to support pod life. I believe they starve in systems without enough pods to support them.

How about clowns? I've got two percs with my gramma and they get along just fine.

Capn, thank you for the welcome and we are still working on the refugium issue it seems to be alot of $$ is it worth it to get one for the sake of this fish? I have read about the mandrin fish and they say you can try rubble piles of live rock in the corners of your tank, so the fish can't get to all the cpodes easy.

alot of money---diy --60 dollars including everything--chaeto, deep sand bed and reef rubble

it is not just for copopods

chaeto uptakes nitrates and phosphates and collects other detrius and organics as the cheato gets denser so it is a great addition to your filtration system

useful bacteria and other varieties of inverts are produced in the refugium

it adds more water to your total water column which is a good thing

you can add live rock and reef rubble which adds to the biological part of your whole system

How easy is it? any tips on starting one?

I used a 30 gal plastic tote from Home Depot and a clip on light from there with a 25 watt energy saver bulb

I drilled a whole about 1/3 from the top of the tote and installed a one inch bulkhead with a tapered end to fit a one inch plastic return line
Since the refugium is higher then the sump gravity drains the water so no need for an expensive pump

On the other end i have T,d the flow and use a ball valve to control the flow rate into the refugium so no pumps needed there

the water from my tank(upstairs) is t'd so as to have separate fllows to the refugium and sump

the water returns to the sump via gravity because the fug sits higher

it returns to the sump at an area past the skimmer so it is returned directly to the tank--this stops copopods etc from being skimmed

inside the refugium:
six to seven inch deep sand bed
reef rock rubble
chaeto--I got it from a friend to start with so it had inverts ect in it
couple of pieces of live rock---not really necessary but i like my rock spread out between the refug, sump and tank--it gives more swimming room for three tangs I have

waterone,

I have a BioCube 14, I have 1 - perc clown 1 - royal gramma 1 - six line wrasse. Everyone seems to get along great. Everyone told me to watch out for the wrasse, he will go after the other fish.......not the case, infact if any of the fish are its the royal gramma. The royal realy isn't bad, only at feeding time. If ye wants a certin pcs of food he will open his mouth and lundge at the other fish to scare it away. But thats all.......their all fine

Is it eaiser with a sump?

yes it does away with two pumps and there is more control over the flow in case of a power outage

My refugium has a 3" to 4" sand bed... Unfortunately, it's a pretty darn tiny fuge... It's my sump.. I convertetd the largest section to a refugium.... there are some pieces of live rock the aforementioned sand, a ball of cheato and some Feather Calupera...

I have a 46 bow front with a Royal Gramma, Two false perc clowns, a 6 line, a long nose hawk fish, and a Bangai cardinal.

I see the Royal gramma and the 6 line harrass each other and once in a while I see the gramma go after my hawk or the cardinal. Nothing too drastic yet. The gramma grew huge fast, it is about 3 inches across which i think is full size.

Welcome the the "29g club"! IMO, put the Mandarin on hold for now and don't consider getting one until you have a steady supply of pods from an established refugium. As for the RG, I had one in my tank that was quite territorial. I think they are a great community fish, but just like the six-line these more territorial types are better put as one of your last in. I encourage you to make a tenative plan for stocking your tank and order them by reputation for aggressiveness. Don't forget to include a quarantine tank in that plan. It was a direct addition to my 29g that brought ich to my tank and I lost 3 fish, including the RG.
