Royal Gramma to a 180 tank?

Hi everyone..

recently checked out a Royal Gramma & was wondering if it would be a good addition to my 180 reef tank?

just worried if its too small for a tank this size... and looking for possible comments on its behavior as far as reef safe/ being a community fish/ with new additions later etc...

My stock right now: a pair of occ clowns, 1 chromis, blue tang, yellow tang, flame angel. coral beauty angel, flame hawk fish, midas blenny, watchman goby & one spot foxface.

Looking to add anthias in the future..

thanks for your support as always :spin3:

Your tank is nothing compared to what it's used to in the wild............LOL

And yes, they are reef safe.

@ myram .. yeah thats right!!! lol.. well anyways what I was getting at was, will it hide a lot & not be noticeable because of its size factor unless its out in the open...

sounds like a good addition so far.. so the next question.. haven't seen a mated pair out there.. is it easy to mate? just add at the same time?

I have one in my 180. Great reef fish. Initially might stay close to the rocks but once acclimated you'll see it all the time.

Mine likes to hide so make sure you have some caves. Mine can hold its own against a kole and yellow tang and it loves to come out when I am around. Definatly one of my favorite fish. I don't know for sure but i heard from my LFS that you can't keep 2 males together so make sure you have 1 male and many females (again not certain). Great fish! Good luck!

I Have 4 of them in a 400. Sometimes they are all hanging out together and sometimes you can't spot one of the.

Beginning of February I was diving the Carribbean, and there would be solitary rocks out in an open area with a half dozen Royal Grammas hanging out around it.

I had a coral beauty and a yellow tang that would not let a new-to-tank gramma out of a hole in the rocks. the gramma starved to death. not saying it WILL happen, but that it MAY happen. the dwarf angels can be aggressive to new tank additions when they're established.

I just got my first one as a rescue fish, but I'm thinking adding another 3 or 4 would be a beautiful addition to the tank :)

Thanks for the idea!

I have a pair in my 240 and they are quite enjoyable. Get along with all fish, big and small and don't bother a thing.

Guess am gonna shoot for a pair... was thinking about more.. My rock work in my 180 is 3 different islands with plenty of caves & overhangs.. and two islands connected with a bridge.. anyways..I also wanna add some schooling fish preferably anthias ..so don't want to add more than a pair & crowd the tank..

so planning to check out a few lfs nearby to see what they got... does it make sense to buy a big one & a small one & pair them up if I don't find a paired one? do they all start out as one sex when they are small??
