Rule of diminishing returns....

Ok, here's my question:

With respect to cooler and cooler temps, at what temperature does it cease to extend the life of an octo?

In other words, when will the temp start adversely affecting the octo (or severely slowing its activity), instead of prolonging its life?

What species? Many tropical species do not do well below 72-73. Some of the FLorida dwarf species can get down to 70, a bimac probably 64-65.

I doubt that you will find much specific info on this for most speciesl

This is a species that occurs on the southern California coast and during the winter will experience temperatures this low or lower.

try 50 to 60 during the winter months, here in san diego the water can and does get very cold, when i bought "tattoo" over at octopets.com Jim said to unplug the heater period, and that can extend the life of the octo from 12 mo.to 18 mo.Bimacs like the colder water

Thanks for passing that heater info along, Alien. I will unplug mine immediately. BTW, when you held the babies, did they try to nip? And if so, what did it feel like?

No heater at all unless you have in a very cold basement or romm. Keep over 59 for Bimacs. Bites feel like a bee sting, but thats while they are small!
