Running a Hammerhead on Apex?

Just wondering if anyone is running a hammerhead of their Apex 10A outlet? Want to make sure it is ok to do as I have never had an Apex before. Please let me know if you have had success with doing this thank you for your time in advance!

It's not a good idea. You could offload it with a motor contacter but it will take some custom wiring. The inrush current will more than likely wear out the relay.

I'm sure some people do it but I'd avoid it.

I ran a Hammerhead for years on my Apex with no issues. It draws less that 4 amps which is fine.

What benefit is this? They aren't really meant to be started and stopped for something like feeding. If it is just going to run all of the time, then just plug it into the wall and forego another point of failure.

Is this more of a question about "can" rather than "should?"

Running amps are fine but inrush currents likely are not. The contacts in those tiny relays are working extra hard! I'll see if I can find the inrush specs.

Will it work? Sure and maybe even for a long time.

I would not do it, eventually the contacts will arc closed or enough carbon will build up causing a resistance through the contacts. In rush current on a mechanical relay is what causes them to fail. Spoken from experience.

The reason I just plugged it into my apex is because I got an ale....so it will shut the pump off if the Wld detects water.

Hadn't pondered that the EB8 couldn't handle it.

Seems there is some debate here. How to determine for sure?

I posted in Neptune to try and clear this up. They aren't so active in that forum though. We shall see.

Ok. Found my motor chart.

On the name plate....

What is the HP and CODE? What voltage are you running at?

If those answers are .25, C, and 110 the inrush is a little over 5 amps. Different motors over the years have different specs.

I wanted to be able to shut my pump off remotely if there were any alarms that shutting off the pump could help. I know it would be a concern if I was shutting it off and on or trying to make some kind of wave maker with it but wanted to know if it would be ok if I just plugged it into the eb8 and let it run until I had to shut it off.

That, and when performing certain maintenance. I don't think most shut these off at feeding. That's a bad idea independent of the Apex as per Reeflo.

Sadly, Neptune ignored my efforts both on RC and on their own forum.

Sorry not following what your saying. You don't think it's ok to run one through the Apex if you just let it run and don't mess with it?

Have you read this thread? I suspect it is fine but some think not.

I have a Reeflow attached to my apex and I don't shut them off unless I am doing my water change every 3 weeks....I feed the tank without shutting this pump I agree it's a bad idea..
