planning on running a sump for a tank that is not drilled. does my sump tank need a pump drawing water out of DT and one pushing water out of sump back into DT ?
No. You can get an overflow box that draws a siphon up and over the edge of your tank. You will need a pump to push the return back up to your display tank.
Overflow box is what you would need, but if you're buying it because you don't want to drill I'm sure a LFS could help you with that or another RC reef member in a local club.
i purchased my tank used. it is currently full operational. basically i dont want to drain the water out. try to have it drilled only to find out it was tempered.
but if u decide not to, get a lifereef siphon overflow, its worth the money.
you only need one pump from the sump to the display, the overflow works by gravity. don't try to get 2 pumps one up and one down, doesn't work, only one pump needed.
Google LifeReef and give them a call. Jeff is the owner and he will tell you exactly what you need, including the size return pump needed. He will send you the overflow box, appropriate hoses, return pump and ball valve for the return. You will get everything you need and complete instructions for installation and sound proofing. I could not be happier with mine. DO NOT purchase one that requires an auxiliary pump to keep the siphon.
The only other option besides drilling and hob overflow box would be to have a sealed sump which is possible if you're good with silicone, but you have to make a lid with holes to run wires through individually through seperate holes so you can silicone around each wire but if you have things in the sump that need air to run this won't work (also you need a gasket for the lid and some way to attach it to the sump)
I have a 40b that was already up and running and recently added a Lifereef overflow and a Mag 7 pump in order to have a 20l sump. Works flawlessly and I highly recommend it if drilling isn't an option (not an option for me neither).
That's the setup I have and it works well for me. Is a drilled tank going to be better aesthetically? Probably. Will this solution work and accomplish what you're trying to do? Absolutely.
