Boss walked around and pulled people into his office and then walked them out the door. Five guys fired in one day. They claim that's all for now but it sure motivated a lot of people here. Glad I am the only one in the company that knows how to build EX trucks.

60 people let go at my place today. fortunatley i too am the only person that can do certain things correctly. i was spared this time. it really sux out there. i hope the new pres can do all he says.

My brother-in-law was laid off a few years back, a couple days after he was laid off they asked him if he could come fix the system he alone knew how to maintain. He went in as a consultant that day and fixed it, a couple days after that they called him back again and gave him his job back, and paid him for the time he was out of the office. It does pay to be the only person in the company that knows how to do some important things.

Did they fire them or just lay them off? If fired, what was the reasoning? Is this a union shop, or just a scab shop(lol..easy fellas)?
At least you made the grade....

No union... wish I made union wages though. They were fired. They had a brief meeting to discuss the firings so there wouldn't be more rumors flying about shop closing or something more drastic than a thinning of the herd.

They were supposedly fired for performance reasons and all of the guys let go were heel-draggers IMO. I guess i should just keep doing what I am doing and hope they keep paying me for it. :)

On another note... I may be selling off most of my equipment and livestock in the near future and maybe moving to a nano tank or getting out altogether.

Man you got such nice stuff. Just stick with the sump/refugium and the corner(kitchen) tank. It would be much easier on you. You have nice stuff and equipment and lots of knowledge, I/we would hate to see you go. Maybe you could be a guppy/molly dealer.....;)

Kevin,
Glad to hear you made the grade! It does not matter if you are white collar, blue collar, no collar....this economy is effecting every industry and probably every company out there. Like you said, make you self indespensible and you will have a better chance, although never immune. I worked in banking for 20 years, lost my job twice. Not a good feeling when you have mouths to feed.
Sorry to hear you are considering downsizing your system or leaving altogether. You have always been great at giving timely advice to the RC masses.
Good luck and don't let it all get to you!
John

Joe, yes i am an inspector, level 2 in mpi, fpi and xray. had asnt level 3 certs for 15 years but they lapsed, also lead auditor visual inspector and in charge of training and trial lots. why?

Thanks for the sentiments guys. I didn't mean to start a pity party ;)

There have been other reasons that would make me consider downsizing. We aren't sure what is going on with our house and if we are staying here for much longer. It would be really hard to move all the stuff I have accumulated and I REALLY need to thin it out more. I think I have the bug too bad to get out completely. There have been too many times were my love/obsession for the hobby has gotten more time than my wife and it has caused problems. I think I need to shift a bit of my focus. Just because she doesn't grow hair algae or bleach out doesn't mean that everything is fine. LOL

Shifting focus is very healthy for the soul. Too many people resist. It's wise to recognize the need for change. Kevin, after 18 years of marriage, I've "reinvested" in my wife and our relationship (started last Spring/Summer). I wouldn't hesitate to say it's been one of the greatest shifts of my adult life. Many more to come, I'm sure. Best of luck to you.

Thanks Ben. We actually just celebrated our 18th anniversary on Feb 9th. Last month my daughter turned 16 and I turned 40 so there are lots of new things to contemplate.
I have ALWAYS had obsessions instead of hobbies and it's hard for some people to understand that drive to learn more and obtain more in something that is ONLY a hobby.
I'm sure lots of people on here know how it is though.

Ditto, here. It's always been a hard distinction to make at my house.

Sad part about the layoffs is that I think that many companies are healthy enough to not lay anyone off but are using the economy as an excuse - because everyone else is doing it. It becomes a viscous cycle.

The good news in not necessarily the stimulus package but we have reduced fed funds rate to 0 - the lowest in history and pumped trillions into the economy via the fed and treasury. It won't happen yesterday but it will improve our economy.

Now we all hold our breath and see how long we can last.

I agree, some places are using the economy to put it to employees, figuring "where they gonna go now anyway if they don't like it"....
