Rusty Vortech

Took my Vortech off to clean it and noticed it all rusty - i did lose some corals recently which i have had for years but cant know for sure if this is the cause.

is it normal for the Vortech to rust? shouldnt it be rustproof considering that it is meant to be submerged in salt water?

please let me know what can be done to rectify this.

i must say that i was quite happy with my vortech and was considering purchasing another one, but i am quite concerned now about this rusting.

Looks like your magnet has been rubbing a lot.
what does that mean?

Thanks Tim. I'll be mailing the wet-side in for repair as per his e-mail.
Much appreciated.

I saw mine with slight pitted rust as well when i took it out to clean yesterday. I don't really bother by slight pitted rust but i'm concern if this deteriorate after a year or so. should we change the magnet ? Apprantly, it looks almost impossible to prevent rubbing against the cover with the design (sorry, i maybe wrong).

Just hope to learn ways on how to protect the coating reducing the necessity to change the magnet.

Is there any place to buy the coating so that we can just apply the coating as and when it requires ?

Thanks

Hello Wonder,

Water does diffuse through the plastic coating and in time, the magnets do require replacement. We estimate this around 18 months. A new magnet costs $15. Discoloration is normal below the coating and when the coating has been breached it is obvious, as you will see wet rust as in the picture above.

mine are badly rusted (much worse than the above pic) and it worried me for a while. at the moment i am between tanks, so my vortechs are being passed around the club to people who want to try them. none of them have had any issues whatsoever (including a TOTM). in fact everyone's tank has benefited with visible improvements (growth/color/pe) from the flow (and maybe even extra 'trace elements' coming off the magnets :))

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your advise. Mine certainly looks fine now and will change accordingly when it is due.

Just wondering if there is any possibilty that you guys can start selling laminated film to prevent changing the magnet . :)

We're always looking into ways to make our product better, and I will absolutely update everyone as soon as a better solution is found.

update:
I shipped my vortech out monday, they received it tuesday, repaired it and sent it back out already. that's good service!

Just wanted to add that a little rust will not cause RTN.. I have metal clamps that have rust on and have for over a year with no RTN issues.
