I had a thought, could a rusted wetside magnet be switched with the magnet in the motor?

No, the coating on the motor magnets is epoxy and not sufficient for water proofing.

got my vortech back today with the 'new' magnet. I must applaud their quick turn around time and excellent service.

i shipped it to them monday, they got it tuesday, repaired it, shipped it back to me wednesday, and i got it back in my tank thursday - dont really see how much faster it could be.

the 'new' magnet however doesn't really seem new. it does have some wear on it and even a speck of rust which is surprising, but i cant complain - it still beats the one that was on it.

That's just the way they look from manufacturing. The plastic coating is not necessarily perfectly smooth, and sometimes there are discolorations below the coating even when new. It won't have an effect on anything.
