So ive had my haddoni for a few weeks now, doing great, i beleive. My queston is the "schedule" the anomone on is wierd in the fact that the anemone will shrink down at night(deflate) to a very tiny size, then sometimes it is full open by morning other times it takes 3 or 4 hours before it inflates back up, is this normal? my clowns dont go near it yet, it is VERY sticky, and eats every other day when i feed it . All levels are perfect.

TIA

While I am not a Haddoni Expert, I did have one for a while before it outgrew my setup and was given to a friend who had a huge tank, Mine occasionally did the same thing, People said it was normal, as long as the mouth is not gaping or its spewing its inerds out its fine.

Here is what Mine did occasionally at night...

And then it would come back out the next morning, I think you have nothing to worry about, just keep monitoring it, watching the mouth area, I noticed mine tended to do that more when I was feeding it more often. It sounds like yours is a very healthy one, and if it shrinks down once and a while I wouldn't worry to much about it.

I miss having one, I wish they stayed in the 4-6" range....LOL, that would be cool....I love Haddoni Carpets...You have a beautiful one too!

Thanks,

I figured it wasnt too much of a problem , mine doesnt look like what your did( as far as covering itself over) mine just literally goes from big to tiny, much like a mini version of the big nem when its inflated.

Thanks for the response though, i feel much better!!

Oh, yeah if its only just shrinking a bit in size, thats totally normal, as mine grew (it doubled in size during the time I had it) it would do the same thing, I don't know if you have ever noticed it happens to mushroom corals too, musrooms sometimes are small but then they can seem to stretch out and almost double in size from one day to the next.

Yeah if its not even closing down like what I pictured then no worries....Have fun with it, Im getting the ich to get another smaller one, but finding good friends with big tanks to pass them down to when they outgrow mine might be problem.....might just force me to upgrade to a bigger tank myself...LOL:lmao:

How small sure, they should will get a bit smaller, but if it is more then 50% on a regular basis I would have some concern.

im not sure if its more than 50% i would say around 50% doesnt do it every night but quite a bit. What would/could be the cause? nothign has changed its ooks very healthy, mouth looks fine..

As I said, I am far from an expert, but my imediate thought would be that you mention you have had it for only a couple of weeks, and if your water tests out ok, then my first thought would be its still adjusting to your conditions, weither thats water parameters or even the type of lighting you are using compaired to what it was used too...from what your describing it wouldn't cuase me to freak out, I would just watch it...

Thats just my .02c of limited experience, Toddrtrex though has much more experience, so I would listen to him more than me...if he tells you to worry....then worry...

Is that a current picture -- with the lights on?

It could just be that the anemone is doing an internal water change -- since it is new, this could be somewhat of a concern if it was doing it all the time.

But, lets start from scratch

When did you get it?
Where did you get it?
Did you acclimate it to your lights?
What are your parameters -- with numbers.
What fish do you have?
What flow? (( S. Haddonis are not fans of high flow. ))

Got then nem from Divers den on 2/8
Light acclimated until 2/15

Params:
Mag: 1390
Calcium: 470
KH : 8.9
Nitrates: 0-5
Nitrites: 0
Phosphates: 0-0.01
Ammonia: 0
PH 7.7-8.0
Salinity : 1.025
All tested Via salifert

Flow.. i do have alot but the nem moved to the side of a rock structure were there is practically no flow at all, not even enough to make it slightly move, just passive water, on top of the fact its on the sanbed which the flow is very low to begin with

Fishwise, i have 3 yellows and a purple tang, kole tang, scopas tang, two barred rabbit, two photon percs, mandarin, purple firefish and two copperband's. None of them go anywhere near the nem as if they dont erven notice it(including my clowns) The first picture is yesterday afternoon, and the small pictue of it shrunk is about 2 hours ago( right when the lights went on) ..but by days end it will look like the first pic agian,

2 things worth mentioning-

They will inflate and deflate when they are settling in. It could just be trying to work it's way under your rockwork.

They shrink up like that when they feel threatened. I got a mindblowing view of that action one day when mine grabbed my tongs and wanted to eat them. I won and it shrank in about 2 seconds to that size.

It almost looks like the last picture you posted the mouth of the haddoni is gaping open - or is it just a bad angle?

no, When its large the mouth is totally closed, when its small the mouth is open but not inside out or anything. its eating fine, colors are great and when its open it looks great!..i just dont understand...nothign in my tank bothers it or even goes near it..
