SA nigripes

I picked up a pair of these from my LFS on Friday, having originally intended to look for a mate for my maroon clown. They didn't have any small enough, but I saw a newly arrived pair of nigripes, bred by Sustainable Aquatics, at the store, and fell in love with them. I ended up trading my maroon in for them!

For anyone who's interested in nigripes, I have to put in a word for the SA-bred nigripes: mine have been outstanding. I was a little worried getting these clowns, having read from even expert aquarists that they were tricky to acclimate. I've also kept pink skunk clownfish before (also captive-bred, and IIRC part of the same species complex) and remembered how skittish they were, so I was prepared for nervous, flighty fish that would flee at my approach and take days, even months, to settle in.

But these captive-bred nigripes seem rock-solid. They eat well, are active (much livelier than the GSM, who, though beautiful, was content to just hang out in a cave), and seem interested rather than afraid when I approach the tank. They're beautiful, with a rich cinnamony-peachy-brown color and a perfect shape. And I kind of like having a somewhat uncommon (in captivity, anyway) species. Great fish! :D

ive had these fish as well. quite surprised how much more strikingly resiliant they were than their wild caught cousins.

get some pictures up!

ill need a mate for my lone wild caught nigripes here very soon and would like to try some more of SA fish.

I love the way they look but if you haven't met an adult female Nigripes.. well then you have never met a mean clown fish.

I've had my SA nigripes pair for 1 1/2 years now. My female is afraid of my hand, so not very aggressive at all.

They are dwarfed by my Purple tang & Muellers BF & no other small dither fish to boss around.

Yeah, these two are a complete contrast to what I've read about WC nigripes. I'm also surprised at how relatively calm they are, compared to the pink skunks I once had. BTW, have you ever heard yours vocalize? My pink skunks used to "chitter" at each other and it always cracked me up...I was wondering if other members of the skunk complex did the same thing.

I'll have to get some pics up once my LED fixture is finished (this weekend, hopefully) and I clean the sponges off the glass. Thanks to ct_vol for posting that link--that is what they look like, very beautiful fish!
