Sacramento Gyre Discussion

I killed ALL that Coral!
First of all, a big Thank You to MARS! Yesterday I received the Gyre that I won in the swap raffle a couple months ago. I've gotten several texts from other "œbig" peninsula owners in the area, so I figured we could discuss it here.

My tank is a 7x2x2 peninsula. The previous flow arrangement was WP40s x 3 on one side of the overflow and a WP60 on the other. I've operated these on the gyre theory for the last year, alternating side to side 15 minutes at a time.

The Gyre is nicely built and packaged, that's pretty well established. "œFlow" I mounted it horizontally on the face of the overflow. Its running on constant at 100% and the movement at the opposite end of the tank is similar to what I was getting from the WP60.

Who cares what I think about it, in the next days and weeks we will see what the coral thinks about it!:hammer:

These look cool and from the looks of the videos I have seen, they work very well too. Jeff, is one sufficient enough for your tank, or do you think you need 2?

Cool, I will be watching this. The flow in reverse is about 50% of the forward speed from what I hear. I will likely be getting one soon.

Nice! These types of water movement devices are game changers imo.

I hope so too, I'm tired of the jet stream alleys I need to keep clear of coral and the dead zones where nothing will grow.

Probably too soon to know for sure. I'm running at 100% to get the visual movement I had already. Ideally I'd need it running at less than that so I could bump it up in the future.

I wonder how this will work in non peninsula tanks

My guess is it has more to do with layout of rock than the orientation of the tank.

Wow, if I ran mine at 100% i'd have water on the ground for sure. I'm running anywhere from 10-30% on my tank. I've settled on constant mode right now.

Mounting it on the overflow seems like it would be great idea on a peninsula.

Peninsula tank rocks! Gonna wait for your reviews on the pump before I get mine. Definitely a game changer pending reliability testing.

Did you guys notice any detritus kickup/cloud when you first started the unit. Just wondering if there was any indicator that some of the dead spots turned over.

I put one in my 70 gallon and it was a big kick up. Still figuring out the modes and tried it horizontal as well vertical. Very cool

24 hours in. I've been running the gyre on constant, and the bank of WP40 cycles on for 5 minutes every 10 minutes to keep it chaotic.

Two things have jumped out at me. The stuff I stirred up yesterday when I started it is still in the water column! Running on constant just below the overflow won't let the stuff settle.

The undertow on this thing is crazy. A shrimp molted this morning. The molt is wedged under a monti about 18" below the Gyre. It's getting pulled straight up. :) this was previously a huge dead zone at the back of the tank.

I think I might put my mp10 back in the other corner of my tank to stir stuff up. I have to run the gyre pretty low so the acans stay happy. I have tried mounting it horizontally now on the side of the tank. I think that is the most effective way to cover the entire tank flow wise.

Jeff,

good stuff, you think with it right underneath the overflow intake, this would push floating particles away from the overflow and stay in the tank longer floating in the water column?

Regards
Tom

^^^ Tom, that I what I am taking/understanding from Jeff's comment. I also wonder if reducing the speed might help. That way the pump isn't sucking stuff into it without giving it a chance to find it's way into the overflow.

I don't think this is a big deal. Reasonably small particulate matter in the water column will behave similar to water molecules themselves. The pump can't prevent the water from going into the overflow. Particulate matter will follow the flow of water into the overflow as well. Surface skimming is probably overrated in most tanks these days because of surface agitation which as we're seeing with the gyre is very strong.
