Sad Day for my Reef

Today is going to be a sad day for my tank. When I first entered in this hobby about 6 years ago my wife had made purchase that I was very hesitant about. She bought a Deresa Clam that was approx 2.5 inches. Being new to reefing I had started doing alot of research and had found that clams were more a intermediate to expert level item and I was fairly certain it would not last.

Lets fast forward to present day. The Deresa clam had survived 3 tanks transfers and a more than a few tank set backs. These stem from Ammonia spikes to lack of maintenance and a few temp spikes. These are what I know of or can remember. Well yesterday I get home and my wife says "Can you look at the Deresa for me". I go and look and see the mantle is separating on both sides. I go to inspect for something harming the clam and find nothing. No pyramid snails or bristle worms. I start diging deeper and think of changes to the reef. Now I am not saying that this was the cause but I did just change GFO and the new GFO was not my normal GFO brand. I have since turned off the reactor but the mantle has reseded more than 50% and all the openings are wide open. I fear the worse and by the time I get home I am pretty sure it will be dead.

I know I had a good run however I do know this is a HUGE loss to myself and my wife. It was her favorite piece and I think I took for granted how much it can take..... I know people have done fresh water dips however I know its far to gone and I think the best chance is to just do nothing at all and allow nature to take its course. I am going to look for some pics of the good times and post for everyone to see if possible. And who knows maybe, just maybe, when I get home it may turn around.. But for now this is a down point in my reef.

Sorry to hear Hugo -- Sounds like it is a goner -- be prepared to remove it quickly so it doesn't pollute the rest of the tank. Anne and I especially feel your pain after the loss of our prized clam this year.

Sucks Hugo, do you think it has anything to do with removal of the sand bed though? Got some trapped in it ? Either way sorry to Heather.

It has been 2 weeks of any sand removal. Went down hill starting Tuesday. I thought maybe it was astrenia starfish just irritating the mantle. But who knows. You know how much Heather loved that piece.

That does suck. But I must say that anyone that can keep any coral alive for 6 years, especially a touchy one, should feel a great sense of accomplishment. No easy task.
