Sad day in South Africa

In South Africa there are some attacks, not too many though. In certain points we have shark watchers and sirens go off when a shark is spotted in certain bays. Everybody then needs to leave the water. We have a great white problem. They tend to pop up alot of the time. In Gaansbaai they chum the water so much, the sharks are blood thirsty.

J Bay is pretty renowned for its shark activities. So unfortunate and condolences to the family.

he was probably wearing a full black wetsuit / fins...looked like a lame seal on the surface.
i wonder why more wetsuit / fin manufacturers dont put more research into offering suits that break up the profile to look less like dinner.

I dont know what he was wearing but I see a company in Australia is now manafacturing wet suits that are light blue and black and white. Light blue is to keep make you seem invisibile in the water and black and white is too make you look like a venomous animal. But i agree they need to.

Cool link!
You are very right, in the eighties the testing showed conclusively that whites and tigers are attracted to dark wetsuits because they are similar to seals colouration and actually repelled by the ones that were made similar to banded sea snake patterns.
On average most manufacturers don’t give a rats; the dark colours don’t show marks as quick and it is far cheaper to make a wet suit with less colour changes.
I get my wetsuits made with extensive colour changes and buy fins with two tones at least, have done for many years!

We have a great white problem.

Why are they a problem? When humans enter "their world", we are taking a risk. The sharks aren't the problem. It's statements like that that get less educated people the idea to go kill them to rid us of the "problem".

I'm not saying don't go swimming, but if your swimming off the coast of south africa, understand the risk and be willing to take that gamble.

My apologies on the statement. After reading now it sounds very primitive. Considering the amount of attacks we have had and the amount of great whites we have in our waters the ratio isn't bad at all. We do understand that there are sharks in our waters and as you can see in the video, the shark didn't bother the divers.

Here is a great white spotted a few weeks back at one of our common dive spots.
