This morning I found my female perc , Ginger, on the floor. I had no idea clowns were jumpers. Will her mate, Fred, take to another female or do I need to replace him with anither "pair"?
Yes he will. I would get a new perc a fair bit larger or a fair bit smaller than your current male, that way it should be more clear who is dominant. However, since your current fish is a male, if the new fish is the same size that would work too, but there would just be more aggression since if they were the same size one would have to assert its dominance more so than if one was clearly larger. Nice choice of names btw lol. If you get a larger one than the current male, you can name the new one ethel
Under the right set of circumstances every fish is a jumper. Without a screen top, such circumstances will invariably present themselves over the long run. A while back I lost my diamond goby to the carpet, and I had literally never observed it above the midline of the tank so go figure.
Working on finding/making a screen top this morning. I have a rimless 60 cube and would like to aviod the standard brown or black frame to attach clear mesh. Does anyone jnow where I might a clear frame to attach the mesh to?
Well, eggcrate let me down. Fred apparently found just the right spot to jump through. Very very disappointed. Looks like i'm going to have to cover it completely.
I am sorry for your loss I too lost a jumper through eggcrate, however it was a wrasse rather than a clown. I'm still puzzled how he made it though the eggcrate too.
Each of my two clowns have jumped out of my tank, My ocellaris jumped out for who knows how long but he was almost dried up barely moving when i found it. I honestly don't understand how he lived when I put him back in the tank but its been 8 months and he is doing better than ever. The second clown (my maroon) jumped out one night i happen to hear the splash and found him on the floor in time to save him. Neither have made such an attempt since.
so from my very limited experience it isn't uncommon for clowns to jump.
My female jumped three times. Saved her twice, sucks. They were from Rods. Got a new smaller perc and it didn't take long. They get along fine. But these are also fish I can catch in a cup just by filling it next to them. So easy going.
My wrasse just jumped through the egg crate the other day. By the time I got it out from behind the stand, it was covered in dust (I really need to clean more). Fortunately it survived the ordeal and I certainly hope it has learned a valuable life lesson.
Sorry to hear about your loss. My clown jumped into my coast to coast overflow yesterday and decided to check the theory behind the Bean Animal overflow design. The overflow protection works great, the fish not so much anymore after getting stuck in a ball valve.
