Sailfin Tang/ick

So I had my eye on a sailfin tang at my LFS. He's been there a month and a half fat and eating well. Last Thursday I went to pick him up and the owner moved him the day before into a 125 with all the new fish he purchased. I took the risk because he still looked good. I put him in my so called quarantine tank a 40 breeder with a maroon clown some soft corals and 3 peppermint shrimp. He was supposed to go into my 125 which is the main display and doing extremely well. On the way home I thought, yeah I'll put in the 40 for now see how he does. Sure enough on Fri. Evening he had about 3 to 4 white spots on him and Sat morning was even worse. So rather than Hyposalinity or copper. I decided to do freshwater dip. Had him in for 7 minutes and he swam amount the bucket the whole time. Tough fish! Sunday, all day no spots! He and the clown about 4 days later, their skin and Finns are beautiful and eatin like pigs still. So my question was this ick? Or just some other parasite. How many days is it after ick spots fall off and cycle again? And how long would you leave him in the tank? I'm thinking at least another 3 weeks. By the way the LFS stores tank I saved him from, is doing poorly.

Fresh water dips do nothing for ich, they improve temporarily flukes and velvet. If the fish came from a tank with parasites, it will be bringing along those parasites. I suggest reading the stickies for more information.

If you don't want to do copper, you might look into tank transfer for treatment of cryptocaryon (ich). Also, I hate to be that guy, but a 125gal tank is way too small for a Sailfin Tang. They get huge - an 8ft. tank is the recommended minimum.

That's ok if your that guy. But I think it will be a few years before he's that big. I'm sure a lot of reefers lose them before they get that big.
