Salinity sold at LFS 1.021!!

I've always made my own saltwater but today I ran out of new filters on the RO/DI unit which I get online...so I decided to go to the locale LFS here in Algonquin to purchase 30 gallons of saltwater.
After dumping all the water in a 50 gallon trough for aeration/PH purposes,I decided to test the Salinity...to my surprise this measured 1.021!!!..I called the locale LFS and they stated that yes this is a little low but it's not to bad...***
Is salt becoming that expensive that we need to rip off the customer now? Thank god I have some extra salt laying around to bring this back up to 1.025-1.026.

Anyone else find this insane or am I just picky about my measurements?

Did they tell you it was 1.025 when you bought it?

Some people run their tanks at 1.021, especially FO tanks.

Unless they said it was higher I don't think they were trying to pull anything and I'd just relax....

aquaman67- They stated that their salt is at 1.024 of which I can adjust, this is why I called them to let them know that it was quite lower than expected.

Thanks for your quick response

Oh, I forgot to mention that I would not run REEF tanks at 1.021. Corals do better in higher salinity of 1.024-1.026

when the water evaporates the salinity fo the ASW(artificial salt water) rises. So if they undershoot it when they make it up...it wont be high when they sell it after a couple weeks or whatever.

too high of salinity is much more dangerous than too low of a salinity. the fish store is erring on the side of caution, or more likley the guy mixing it didnt really give a crap and or the equipment they use to make it up isnt calibrated

in any case, I highly doubt they were trying to squeeze a few cents out of you.

kudos for paying attention. you always should check the water before you add it...including for alk and calcium levels when you get lots of corals as you cant always count on the salt mix itself being perfect either

sps1-2-b- do you keep a reef tank with salinity being this low?
I couldn't imagine.
I understand FO with live rock but a complete reef system.

Only freshwater evaporates leaving salt behind thus you get increase in salinity. So if you had 1 gal of 1.021 salinity and half a gal of freshwater evaporated, then you would have the same amt of salt with less liquid; hence, it's saltier.

Also, lower salinity helps with some parasites/diseases

Has to be lower then 1.009 to have any real effect. The only reason to keep at 1.021 ish, is to save money -- that is the only benefit, and will only hurt the fish in the long run. Should be 1.025/6.

I thought in general lower salinity can equal less stress (to a point) and that most LFS's keep the salinity in their own displays lower than what you would keep at home.

My guess in this case is that the guy mixing is lazy or using an old hydrometer.
