not necessarily, i was using red sea for quite awhile, i switched to io and i couldn't believe the difference in ca and mg drop off. i was supplementing alot and didn't understand why all of a sudden the drop off. after finding this link i found the reason. now i know to use red sea imo.
my friend uses kent salt and was having elevated alk and ca which according to this thread would support that theory.

I'm pretty sure that the salt debate was never actually finished, as yes, it is always batch dependent. Some people use the same salt for years, doing the same things to it before using it, and then boom, one day their tank dies (not really, but the params can be different, etc).
It seems that aquarium salt creation is much more complicated than what people give it credit for.
