Salt Prices

Where has everyone found the best price on Salt in the greater Milwaukee area.

After hitting 5 shops on Saturday the best price I found was $66 for a 150 gallon pail at Aquatics. There 50 gallon bags are $22.00 so there is no real savings getting a lager busket there. Another store was up to $89.00 for a 150 gallon Bucket, and many did not carry it buskets just 50 LB bags.

I remember someone selling it under $40 a busket not long ago at all. Where was it though? And are they still selling it at a deal?

Petsmart does match prices, you can print out there web prices, or just bring in your F + S catalog, they even match sale prices and don't add nothing for shipping!!!!

Is there a petsmart down there?

There's a Petsmart in Madison (near East Towne Mall) and I recently bought a bucket of salt (IO) for about $38 by bringing in a printout of their internet price.

by the time you drove to 6 different fish stores the money you spent in gas would have covered a bucket of salt from the first store.

Interesting thing. here. PetSmart in Greenfield will not match F&S prices but only the PetSmart on line price. As of Saturday there was listing for 160 gallon pails on line for Pet Smart. Therefore there normal price was $48, but with a discount I was able to get it for $43.00

Now the $29 F and S price sounds good but how much is shipping? It only take $14 shipping and handling to surpass the $43.00 Pet Smart store price.

An added note the $29 price is actually less than wholesale.

Dr. F&S has no added weight fees on shipping salt. It's a win win for the consumer.

Wholesale to store "x" is different to store "y". Depends how much your distributor/wholesaler is charging.

Well when IK was doing $1000+ every week in wholesale orders I used to be ab le shift my ordering to the wholesalers with best specials at the time. One I used to like for salt and twice a year they put Reef Crystals on sale for well below anyones elses price on Instant Ocean.

Then there was always the quantaty buy breaks, but who wants needs a basic truck load of salt to save $7.00 on a bucket.

An interesting thing I noticed though is a lot of stores are now stocking more Kent, and Oceanic Sea Salt. As well as the pre mixed sea water. Makes me wonder how hard it is for someone to mix the powder with RO or DI water?

It depends on the system. I have a 12G nano tank at my office. With such a small setup, it didn't make sense for me to buy RO water, buy Salt, keep buckets of both, and mix it in an office enviroment.

It was far easier to just buy the pre-mixed water.

When I setup my 210G at home, it was obviously a different story.

PS: Fed-ex just dropped off my 7 buckets of Reef Crystals that I bought from Foster & Smith for $31.99 for 160 gallon buckets. Shipping (including some other misc. dry goods) was a total of $17.99

I always buy salt 4 buckets at a time to save the most money shipping from Foster and Smith... I totally agree with you Ryan that is by far the best way to do it if you have the room for it.

I agree with all those that said DFS... I just ordered 3 buckets of Reef Crystals for $95 plus shipping, plus some Micro Vert from Kent for $11.99 for a 16oz bottle!

Compare that to Aquatics Unlimited- $12.99 for 8oz for Micro Vert and $69.99 for the 160G buckets. Total was $125.00 including shipping and tax. Damn good compared to the $200+ from Aquatics
