apparently guppies can be acclimated and kept in saltwater.
Has anyone ever heard of or tried this?
Are they reef safe?
I'm wondering if I could keep one in my 2.5g.
thanks!

Havnt heard about guppies but I have seen mollies in brakish and salt water. I dont know If they are reef safe probably are. A saltwater guppy if one exists might be fine a 2.5 but not a molly.

yeah, I keep fw mollies, so I know they def need a bigger tank!
I did some more research on the gups, and I think this is gonna work!
I'm gonna find a pretty feeder guppy for like 15 cents:)
I wanted a clown goby but they are really prone to illnesses. I'll be saving $10 and getting a hardier fish if I go this route, so Ima try it!
I've heard of some people throwing 'em right in as food, and then not get eaten and survive for years!
obviously I would do a slower acclimation though..;)

Our past experience with guppies was they didn't care for the water parameters of the mollies we also kept. We split the tank into 2 tanks.

I don't think guppies will do well in SW.

Just my opinion, mind you.

Also, from reading articles/topics on here & other places, it's not the best idea to feed FW fish to your SW fish. I believe people in the past did that to their SW fish and something about the fat content & other things messed their fish up.

I hear fancies are really hard in sw but the feeders do great. that's why I'm wanting the cheap feeder type. Glad to hear yours did well!
do ya think they seem out of place in the reef setting?

Everyone has their own views. For me, guppies seem very out of place in a saltwater aquarium.

When I was a child I brought home a jar of saltwater with some hermits and added 3-4 guppies. They lived about a month and most likely died from water quality, not salinity (the jar had no filtration at all). That was Black Sea saltwater, it's specific gravity is only about 1.018 but I think guppy will live in full strength saltwater as well. As for reef safety, I once tried mollies as a remedy against green hair algae in saltwater tank. They tried to bite it off but could not do any damage since they didn't have teeth or enough muscle. I'd expect even less from guppies.

you must've had wimpy mollies:)
my fw ones can shred ANYTHING!
Although It would be a nice side bonus, I just want a guppy because they're one of the few things that can fit in this tank, and they're hardy and cheap.
i don't think so, but can coral live in lower salinity

I work at a local pet store and we just brought in a bunch on black mollies for our salt tanks to help clean them up a bit. In the bag there were several guppies. They were acclimated over to the salt water just like the mollies and have been doing great :)

From all I read anything below 1.025 is stressful and detrimental for corals. While it's hard to beat the price of guppy you might want to check Nano fish section of Liveaquaria. There is some choice of gobies that don't grow larger then 1 inch.

You can acclimate guppies, swordtails, platies to full s/w; but it's best to acclimate them much slower than you would mollies. But IMO these fish are best kept in a nano by themselves; as they aren't fond of strong current or larger, more aggressive fish.
