Saltwater Pond Project

Well, I got the base poured, and took off the plywood supports. There were no cracks in the concrete... so far so good! I am thinking of filling it up with water this weekend to make sure there are no leaks.

Do you think that 2 weeks is enough time to cure fully, or do you advise waiting another week or two before trying to add water?

Did you use a vibrator to shake out any trapped bubbles? We used to use those when doing tiltwall construction.

2 weeks seems like enough time to me, but adding another week wouldn't hurt.

I never even considered shaking out trapped air bubbles, we did use a metal rod to stir/move the concrete around once it was poured. I'm hoping that will be enough. I'm going to follow your advice and wait one more week to add water just to be on the safe side.

I'll take a few more pics this weekend...

not sure if you realise it but there is a Local Reef club. There are a few people in the club who have tried something like this....you might want to talk to them. Also 2 of the guys in the club with large tanks have tanks a few feet underground which hold water and cool their tanks...something else you might want to consider. But if you check in the Reef Club Forum for Florida Marine Aquarium Society, you might get some help from some local guys! When its ready I have a growing Rabbit fish I am gonna have to find a new home for soon! let me know!

Bret, No I didn't realize that there was a local reef club down here. I moved down from Detroit less than 2 years ago, and really have not had the oppertunity to do much looking around. (I just left a job that had me working 70+ hours/week). With my new job though, I should have a lot more time. Does that club you mentioned have a website?

Thanks! I'll have to look into that!

Yeah, I go to Exotic Aquatic quite often actually. I live in Delray but plan on buying a house in Hollywood by the end of next month if all goes well. I work near I95 and Cypress Creek, so I try to stop in every few weeks. Other than Exotic Aquatic, I shop at the Barrier Reef in Boca Raton, and the Coral Reef Farm in Dania. I'd say that I shop at EA most often... How long have you been helping out there?

Made a little more progress this weekend...

My father-in-law to be is from a small town in Sicily, and since the pond is in his back yard, we thought we'd do a mediterranean style finish for the pond. We added a back panel, which will be finished with marble, (used to hide the pump/equipment) and got some marble tiles for the front and sides. He had all of the marble laying around from a previous job, so we didn't have a huge expense to make it look nice. (well, as you can see, it still looks more like a tomb than it does a medterranean pond, but hopefully we'll get it looking nice eventually).

Let's hope it doesn't end up being a tomb. ;)

Will water flow down that back area, or is that solely for aesthetics?

Lookin good Ben!!!! can't wait to see it full of life.
(then you can send some frags back to MI, ha ha ha.

I have been playing around with the idea of doing some kind of water feature with the back drop, but am a little concerned about salt creep/salt loss due to splashing. I guess it would all depend on how it was done... After putting the "headstone" up, I really would like to get some ideas...

pelochas: Yeah, that was actually going to be our back up idea should it not work out with s/w.

blair: Thanks!! Yeah, if this works out, I'll be sure to send some frags up your way! after all... showing Genna your RC build thread made up her mind to let me build a reef into the wall when we do finally get a house!

I'm along for the ride. Can't wait for water to flow. If I get over to that side of the state I want to come see that thing.
