Saltwater pond

I posted the same question in the agressive/predators forum as I thought you could use it for sharks. Are you looking to build something like this in Canyon Lake? I live in Ladera Ranch, it seems the Southern Califonria Climate would work for this project.

They have some at the Waikiki aquarium, they have some that are 300 gallons in volume. I don't know if there are photos on the net.

Yes I will be building this at my house in canyon lake eventually. Just trying to get some info on these from someone with experience so I don't have to go through the major trial and error process. I know it will still be a challenge to succesfully maintain a reef like this.

I think there was a good article on this topic in Reefkeeping Magazine, writen by Anthony Calfo. I remember one of the big tricks was to use 2 pond liners so that in the case of a tear in the first one, there isn't a disaster. But anyway, I would search for the article.

I have a friend (and customer) who has a outdoor reef pond of 2,500 liters constructed out of fiber glass and lined with bricks; its above ground .... I will post some pictures of this pond in the near future.

It was previously a Kio fish pond before he converted it ... it has a 2 hp chiller, a Aqua Medic T5000 Twin with bio tower, Calcium Reactor 5000, Denitrator 5000 and a 55w UVC from TMC running .... all these equipment (except for the chiller) were just recently added to allow him to maintain his corals better ... prior to that the pond had been running for the last 2 years.

Previously, the water was rather green as the pond receives direct sunlight for about 4 to 5 hours a day and it was using 2 macro skimmers that can only handle a load of 1,000 liters and still using the former kio bio filter ...

Anyway, it is a work in progress.

the marine pond is about 2,500 liters roughly 15 feet long by 3 feet deep (1 feet runs under the house and 2 ft deep).

It is a work in progress as we just added the Denitrator, T5000 Skimmer, 200 mg /hr ozone with controller (not seen is a 55 watt UV) and calcium reactor that will be added soon.

The corals are hard to photograph as the MH light is weak since it hangs high above the ceiling ..... but since the corals receive direct sunlight for about 3 hours a day ... they are able to thrive ... esp if you are keeping LPS.

Apart from the above, this is quite a fun project as there are 2 other tanks to care for: one is a 1000 liter, to be a full SPS tank filled with gadgets and all.

And other 480 LPS tank.

i have a 750gl SW pond in my basement...filtration will depend on the type of livestock u wish to keep.....

mine is VERY basic.....2x4 frame w/ 3/4" plywood sitting directly on slab.....has about 300lbs of live rock and is lit by (2) 250w pendants and a 400w SE tucked up under the stair in the soffet

filtration consists of a 30" 100sq' jaccuzi micron/ DIY 4"x7' CC skimmer and a 4"x5' bio tube...system pump is piped like a closed loop from behind my utlility room...

Had a 1hp seahorse 12amp pump but pond temp would range from 79-88...switched to Sequence HammerHead 3amp pump...lost a little flow but temp went way down 72-78 had to use a seperate pump to run skimmer....

Used heavy 45ml liner with two drains and one return and have a RO/DI topping off through DIY kalkreactor....

pond has mixed corals and lrg predator fish...waiting for the right shark...not a heavy load and feed only 3xweek lightly...Never had any water quality issues and its been over two years with no water change

Humidity was and issue in the winter but since pump swap NO problems....

sorry no pics .....

its a great way to have a large tank without the high costs and i prefer looking down on the reef/fish....did mine for under $1000..!!

good luck
