Saltwater Tank at iMater Charter School

DRThompson

2018 FMAS President
As many of you know, I am the School Liaison for FMAS (Florida Marine Aquarium Society).

Earlier this year FMAS started working with iMater Charter school in Hialeah to help start up a couple of Saltwater Aquariums for the students. I've been working closely with their Marine Science Teacher: Dr. Monique Salazar.
Here's a link to the school:

FMAS funded a startup tank for the school. It's a 120gal (6feet long) tank. (see pics below)

Special Thanks to Dr Longo (who donated the acylic Sump) and to Marvin Ballard who helped with plumbing and lights.

We are currently cycling the tank and are in need of donations to get this tank going.

Need list:
Live or Dead rock
protein skimmer
LED lighting or T5 lights
T5 bulbs (4 feet)
Salt
Sand/substrate
RW-15 or similar wave pump

Once this is up and running we'll be asking for corals/fish/Crab/Snails...etc.

please PM me if you can help!

Thanks,
David Thompson

Dr. Thompson- Thanks for all the hard work you put into these schools on behalf of FMAS!!!!

Have they set up the JBJ tank I won at the June meeting Raffle, and I donated to them?

Ill have plenty of live stock to donate once its set up.

Dave,

Matt Jurgeson (sp) said he had a couple pieces of rock he'd donate to the school. Someone just needs to coordinate pickup.

We are starting them one tank at a time. The JBJ will probably be next.

She's been sending out emails and letters trying to get a corporate sponsor but nothing yet. She's out of funds and my budget is about gone so we are going slow. Went with her to a couple of LFS and received a very positive response. The school administrators have been very receptive to the tank. Dr. Salazar is using the cycling as a teaching tool for the students. Everything has been very positive.

Tank cycled, adding fish!!!

Tank cycled, adding fish!!!

Tank has finally cycled. Monique used the fishless method of adding small amounts of ammonia solution to feed the bacteria.

Today she's adding 2 clownfish donated by a LFS in Hialeah.

Below is a pic of about 60lbs of rock donated by Matt Jurgenson and Matt Dudley. I acid washed it last week and started to seed it using some Live rock from my sump. Currently in my garage in a 35gal brute with an airstone and maxi-1200 pump.

Marvin and I will be adding the rock to the schools tank in a couple weeks.

We need to do a couple of large water changes now that the tank has cycled and nitrates are high. Nitrates are currently 100mg/L.

Looking for anyone connected to a water change service who could possibly deliver water (approx 100gal) to get the nitrates down. If you know someone who could donate water or salt, please PM me.
