Hello
I haven't posted in a while but I wanted to document my latest activities. For the last three years I have managed to successfully breed and raise Ocellaris and Percula clownfish. Thanks to many of the home experts on this forum I have learned so much great information and some not so good information.
Why
For the last year I have been gathering parts for a Clownfish Harem Tank that will house around 50 of my Ocellaris Clowns (number not exact right now due to losing count during their last tank transfer). Before the clownfish police and PETA start to bash and nay say, I want to let you know these clowns were hatched on Jan 30th of 2014 and have been together for a year and two months. I have done quite extensive research on the sexual development of Ocellaris and have a plan to keep aggression to a minimum. Right now I have 1% of these clown that have appeared to change to female however after they get transferred to their new tank I expect this number to increase slightly. If you still think this cannot be done and will result in total failure please check out the posts on Bulk Reef Central. http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/index.php/video/index/view/id/375/
If you still think that this is somehow cruel, crazy, or ridiculous please stop reading. However, if you are curious to see how this will go follow along as I start this new habitat for my little orange and black fish.
Hardware
I am finally posting this because I am complete with the plumbing and I promised Frostslayer that when I got the tank wet I would let him know. He sold me the tank I will be using right before Christmas. It is a 75 gallon drilled reef ready tank that will be plumbed into a 30 gallon sump. For the plumbing I have used mostly orange and black schedule 40 plumbing from Bulk Reef Supply (it does look pretty cool). For lighting I will be utilizing a hood that has 4 led moon lights, 4x 54 watt 48" actinics, and 2x 250 watt metal halide lights (I have a very large carpet anemone going in here). For the sump I have a Kessil 160WE Blue Tuna LED light that will be placed over the middle section of the sump that will house macro algae and assist in keeping the nitrates down. I am using a Reef Octopus 2000 protein skimmer that is rated for a 200 gallon tank. I will also be using a Finnex300W heater. For circulation I love my Maxspect Gyre 150 in my 150 gallon reef tank so much I got a Maxspect Gyre 130 for this tank. I am also using sock filtration and a media shelf in the sump to keep the water as clean as possible.
Components
The bottom of the tank is black egg crate. I have found that it keeps rock structure most stable. I have 80 lbs of crushed coral going in and on top of that 80 lbs of live rock that has been curing in a large tub since Christmas (thanks again Frostslayer!). The stand is a well-crafted home built stand with a canopy to match. The inside of the doors are painted with chalkboard paint to have a handy place to track water changes, bulb changes and other maintenance. Right now I am preparing saltwater while waiting for all of the plumbing to cure. I hope to start adding water tomorrow. Here are the pictures I have so far.
