Sand bed to have or have not

gotta say i love having sand in my 90. sure it collects extra debris and will grow some algae i might not want. i've been fortunate enough in lifeto snorkel and dive on reefs from the Keys to Jamaica to Belize to Mexico to the grand caymans and more and they all have sand. IMHO, keep it natural.

I like the beachy look but do not prefer a traditional deep sand bed. I keep several types of wrasses including leopards that need deep sand . I run shallow with a 1/2 inch to an inch for most of the tank bottom with some bare bottom spots and deeper pools of sand 2 to 4 inches here and there mostly across the back of the tank with a powerhead set low in the tank moving water across the mound in the back.

Just switched to BB and do admit it looks a little goofy but it'll look at lot better when the coraline settles in. It just makes it really easy to clean up fish poo, as I can just siphon it out with a turkey baster.

In terms of keeping wrasses, not all wrasses require a sandbed, just something to think about. Look up worldwide corals on youtube. They have a couple of really nice BB tanks.

I have a 6" sand bed in my 220 with 20k+/- closed loop with penductors so we will see how this goes. I was going to go BB but went the other way with the closed loop on the bottom of the tank and 1-1/2" PVC I had to hide it somehow
