Sand choices

Hi all,

i am in the beginning stages of setting up my first my salt water aquarium, the tank is 75 gallons and has been cycling for 3 weeks. After researching possible fish i have found that some species seem to benefit from a sand bed such as wrasses and gobies. Would the Ocean Direct Original http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/original-grade-ocean-direct-live-reef-sand.html be safe grade of sand for the fish and also not blow around or can you offer any other suggestions .

thanks

can you recommend a sand that would be safe to use for sand shifting goby

The popular retail sands have a grain size of 1-5mm and they work fine with gobies.

A grain size of 3-5mm is what I consider the good stuff because the sand doesn't blow around the tank as much. 1-2mm looks really pretty but blows around the tank more easily. Look on the fine print for the grain size and pick your poison.

Sound good Reefkeeper thank you for your help ,i don't want a sandstorm in the tank but was unsure how large of a grain size is acceptable for gobbies

I use the Fiji pink. It is safe for sand sifters and doesn't blow to easily around the tank. I've also found that orange DaimondBack gobys tend to not sift and deposit sand as high into the water column as other gobys do and therefore cause less spread of sand onto rock and corals etc. So that might be a good choice for you.

Too fine a sand can kill coral, because in the high flow our tanks generate, it doesn't stay put.
The sandsifters of various sort also tend to build burrows, and the superfine sand can make their job difficult---it collapses on them.
The finest grade of sand that lets you easily pick up a single average grain with your fingernails or a pair of tweezers is a nice sand for a marine tank.

Dito. I like this as well for the same reasons. Nice product for your setup.

The yellow watchman is also a quiet fellow, just blusters at everything that passes. One of my favorite fishes.
I tend to choose aragonite sand.

I would go for under 2mm grain size for sand sifters. Anything larger has the potential to harm them

I would seriously consider caribsea aragonite Fiji pink or an equivalent size for your needs. Fiji pink is one of the whitest sands on the market IMO. Looks great on a clean tank.

alright sounds good if you think the Fiji pink grain size is large enough to not get blown around I will go with that, I have a 75g tank would 60 pounds be sufficient

That calculator is pretty good, id go with whatever it says. get a bit extra too, never know, may want to add a bit more.
