Hey in my new 180 SPS tank with alot of clams! i am wondering if a 2 inche sand bed will be ok?

i do NOT want to do a DSB so i am wondering if 2 inches of sand will be fine for maxima and dersa maybe a squamsa.

let me know!

thanks!

Nick

New tank should have no clam.
Clams do not require sand bed. If you are set against a Sand bed then don't put one in there. 2 inches sand bed, IMO, have all the detriments, but none of the benifits of a DSB.

i will be running 3 250W reef optic 3 pendants with 14k hamilton bulbs!

also as far as the sand i need some for the look i ahte bare bottoms! an di know not to put a clam in a new tank you have to wait atleast a minnium of 8 months!!!!!

but i dont want to chance the DSB so i will go with a shallow one just for the look, maybe a 1.5 to 2 inch one!

thanks!

Nick

Actually, new studies that show you get denitrification going in the first 1.5 inches of sand as well as deeper. However, once you get below that, you go from anoxic to anaerobic, which is a condition we don't want in our tanks...the release of sulfur dioxide is NOT a good thing.

yeah well i just dont want a 180 gallon SPS reef to crash becasue of the whole DSB thing that went on a while back,

SO i thought why not just do as little as possible just to cover the eggcrate that will be on the bottom under the LR.

anyway so basically the clams will be fine on a depth of oh lets say anywhere from 1-2 inches, most likely being 1 inch now!

thanks!

Yep...clams will be fine and the shallow sand bed will do fine for your tank (it's what I use and recommend for many reasons).

Good luck!

how deep is your sand bed? i am thining just enough sand to cover the egg crate!!!

also how do you attach the clams to such shallow of a sand bed?

thanks!

I am not getting into the DSB thread again but: What studies? Can you give me informations on where I can get these studies?

sand bed

sand bed

I have a1/2 inch sand bed on a 120 RR for a year with a mud filter.
I kept putting the crocea clam on rocks & the clam kept ending up on the sand bed. The clam is doing great & it moves related to if both halides are on he angles himself to draw light from both halides when only the 20k lamp is on he angles himself towards that light. He seems to enjoy being on the sand bed than rocks?

clams on sand bed

Hi! Nick:

The clam put himself on the sandbed & since I have only 1/2 inch
I can see the foot attached to the bottom of the glass tank.
I just left him in the spot he wanted.

There was a summary article in the yearly from Aquarium Fish Mag's reef version (sorry, can't remember the title and the mag is at home). I will try to locate the mag and let you know.

I didn't mean to try and start a debate on DSBs. They do the job that they are intended to do. My (main) problem with them is that they really start looking nasty after a while but just so that you understand that I'm not jumping on the anit-DSB wagon: I used to run one in my old 75 and I got some hydrogen sulfide (should have said HYDROGEN SULFIDE above, sorry!) areas :eek1:.

So, my recommendations are based on my personal experience and the desire to avoid the risk of hydrogen sulfide.

I say just put him on the sand bed. If he wants to burrow in, he'll do it.
