Sand dollar?

I have a friend who dives and brought back a live sand dollar (I told her it was probably illegal) - at any rate - I have it now. I have never heard of anyone keeping a live sand dollar? Is this common? What do they eat?

They live in sand rich in organic matter which they eat in order to digest the attached micro-algae, diatoms, bacteria, detritus, etc. Like other echinoderms they need an established tank with stable parameters. To successfully keep a single sand dollar you should have a big tank with a deep sand bed, a continuous supply of organics, and a healthy clean up crew & filatration system to deal with the sand dollar's own output!
