sand in 29

You can go with a deep sand bed whenever you want. A few months ago i saw a guy's 29g tank and he had about 4 inches of sand.

I'd say start w/about 30lbs and go from there.
 
you can add to it, but dont add a lot at a time. After the tank has been established, the sand will be live by then. When you put new sand over the top, you can kill off some of the bacteria in the sand if you put much more than like an inch i believe it is. Then you wait about a month or so and add another inch i think. I cant remember exactly how it was, but yes, it does matter. You just have to do it slowly.
 
if you want a deep sand bed you will want 1.5-2lbs per gallon, if not 1lb per gallon will be fine. If you are doing a nano reef (im guessing you are) go with 1.5-2lbs per gallon good for filtration and breeding copeopods ect...
