Sand size for mp40

dbm reef

Hey all I am going to set up a new tank and i was just wondering for all you
vortech mp40 owners what kind of sand you are using and maybe some pro's and cons that you have found from experience.

Tank:
DSA 105 NEO Reef ready (center overflow)

Dims:
48"x24"x21" Tall

(1) Mp 40 to start and probably moving to 2 after its up and running
I was thinking 1 on each end

Sand:
I personally like really fine sand but I have heard from some others that
the fine sand might be an issue and that i might get a big sand storm!

So that is why i am starting this thread

Thanks in advance for your thoughts :)

I had an mp20 in a 20L and 40b with fine sand, the only time there was sand floating around was when the clowns kicked it up to change their bed.

Thanks for the response how high did you have them turned up?
Im also thinking since i will have alot of rock that will break it up
enough. and i will start with the power lower and bring it up over time
during my cycling time

In the 20, probably 45-60%, in the 40, all the way. Just make sure that you set the pump pretty high up on the glass, that is what I did, never had issues with that. Best pumps you can buy, IMO.

Oolite on top and fiji pink in the bottom of this pic.

I had said I would never get ANY oolite.. well... I did.. On this new 180... two mp40's... They are about 4" from the top...

ZERO blowing around and I run them ranging from 20-80%

Just a thought.

I have a 75g with a MP40 on approx 85% and a hydor evo that does 1400 gph. I have a 4" sandbed of sugar fine powdery sand (200lbs between display and sump). For the first two weeks or so of upgrading to the MP40, I was constantly finding sand on corals, ruts and valleys being made, and I was fixing it daily. I finally gave up and left it for a few days to see where everything settled. I then smoothed out a few low areas, and left some of the the dunes and valleys it created. Since doing this they arent getting any larger, and everything has just settled into place. Best part is, when I was "fixing the sandbed" daily, the next day it would be all over my corals. Since everything settled, and I stopped fiddling with it this problem has stopped.

Thank you guys for all your responses!
The Special Grade Reef size is it like in
between the fine sugar and the crushed coral?
I take a look at my lfs this weekend and see

You might want to look into the bimini pink also. I just ordered some for my new build.

And yes football i agree that they are the best pumps.
I just got my first one and put it in my cube at about 40 percent.
I love it the sand in my cube is pretty coarse thought so that is
why i was putting this up
Now all i gotta do is work some more weekends so i can get the lights!
I can run my halides that came off of my 300 if it takes longer than expected
but id rather start with the leds.

That is the problem...

If you think about it we do not see lots of sand storms in the ocean. Near the beach we do because of the crashing of the waves.

In nature it gets a happy medium... when we go and try to move things it moves them back... hahahaha

Let it find the happy medium and we work around it. Espc when we have a constant PH running .

Thank you guys all for the comments and your input this is helping settle my
concerns. I agree that you need to sometimes let it lay after the dust settles
or you will drive yourself insane!!! lol My 300 that i just tore down had 2 spots
that i just finally left alone.
