Sand

I know this has been asked a thousand times but I do not remember a clear answer. What kind of sand do you use and where do you get it?

I like the look of white silica sand but I can't seem to find it. Is there somewhere local it can be found?

I also know silica sand is bad at scratching the glass. Is this a problem with all types of sand or just silica?

I use Seachem Meridian. Its a sugar size sand mixed with other size pieces but 90% of it is sugar size. few larger pieces will eventually work their way up. I really like it. I was able to get free shipping throught Petsmart.com I think it might have been a fluke. They also price matched a website where it was cheaper. I did have to talk to someone I couldn't understand but was worth it. I think I had to order a even number of bags as well.

I need to talk to whoever you did because shipping on sand can't be cheap. I wonder if I could do an in store pickup.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I use the aragamax oolitic. I got mine for about 20 a bag at drsfostersmith. I ordered 6 bags (180 lbs) and they only charged about 20 bucks shipping! They go by price vs. weight. I think they lost money on me. I know they have to on salt too!

Yup, just got my bag of aragamax and other misc. equipment. $10 shipping for the entire order.

I'm not sure if they will do instore pickups? I had to call in the order for the price match. When I was on the phone I asked and the shipping is free if my purchase is over 50 dollars correct and she said yes. BUT...when I was going to order a different type of substrate it would not come up as free shipping because that was considered a heavy item and the purchase 50 dollars or more and get free shipping was on all products, excluding merchandise that was considered heavy. The product was on Backorder as well so I had to wait three weeks which was no big deal to me at the time. I thought I would add that ever since I ordered from them online they send me something almost everyday. It goes straight to the Spam box now.

Thanks for the help everyone. I kind of followed DrBDC's advice. I ordered the aragamax but I ordered it from premium aquatics. It was almost $5 more the DrsF&S but I know I will get it in a day or two compared to 5 - 7.
