I really had a great time tonight and thought that Sanjay really lived up to his billing. After spending some time with him earlier in the day it was nice to see just how personable he is, and easily approachable he was. I just wanted to give him a big thumbs up for sharing his vast knowledge with us and for making the trek all the way from Pennsylvania to do so. It was the first meeting my wife ever said to me "you watch the kids in the arcade because I want to hear this!"

I second that. It was a great meeting and I really enjoyed seeing all the familiar faces and the new folks. To many more like this!

Amen.

In spite of the fact that I spend endless hours on RC and then more hours researching things, I felt I learned many
things tonight. I plan to mine Sanjay's site to make my next lighting decision... Thanks.

Yes a big thumbs up!!!
Not to bring down any other speakers we've ever had but I have to say I was glued to his entire talk, and learned more in 1.5 hours than I have from any other speaker!

Now this could have just been me but, I have a double ear infection right now and can't hear very well at all!!
That being said, I though people were the most quiet during his talk than any other speaker, Which I think was due to keeping everyone glued to the material.

He broke it down so the basic person who never though about how lights worked in the aquarium, to those who "thought" they were experts in the subject; could understand everything.

It seemed he had an answer for almost every question, and every situation with lighting.

I was stunned!!!
About an hour into the talk I was "OK; may I be excused? My brain is full!"

I'm sure we could have him back next year and I could still learn even more. (And the LED technology will have changed too)

So bummed about the light spread on the Solaris unit...

Mike did a great job with the Q&A restating the questions and summing up the options and opinions of the answers as well.

I picked up some things last month, but this was simply an education. I would have paid to see him...easily worth my yearly dues right there. Saved me several days of reading lighting threads, and who knows how much money on bulbs.

Totally enjoyed the meeting tonight! Wonderful job, MARS Board !!! You all are doing an outstanding job with the club!!!

For those without mathematical backgrounds that have a hard time with charts and graphs will make out like bandits with this talk. He covered the basics and how to interpret the graphs, so one can loosly compare two different bulbs and compare the colors and peaks and basicly tell if one is going to be "bluer" or "yellower" or "redder". If one was already famillar with the colors they recieved on another bulb, they could use that as a point of reference.

Currently, I am really interested in the different clades of proteins that produce the colors in coral, and would have like to have heard any new research on that, but probably would have needed an hour just to explain that.

Perception of color is another thing, and how it differs, should there be a benchmark or standard for judging coral coloration, after all is it the coral that is that blue, or is it the bulbs?

BTW, if you guys are with him tomorrow, ask him about the decay rate that he has found. I heard that after the first month or two it drops considerably, but the rate of decay slows eventually staying near constant at the 30%, which is what he seemed to be implied by the data.

As well, if the color shift by loosing blue and gaining red was an effect of the materials in the bulb breaking down and oxidizing or even being broke down......which is why some imported bulbs would do it faster as a result of higher impurities in the materials?

Didn't ask 'cuz it was late and I knew they were a little out of the scope.

Incredible presentation. I have to agree on what Steve aid. It was very quiet tonight.

I really hope the video I shot tonight turns out allright. I was down to 0 minutes remaining (less than 60 seconds of tape) when the presentation ended.

I will try to get it edited and available on the MARS website next week.

I am glad you liked that delivery style. As a member of the audience I always rememebered how difficult it is to weed out the answers and opinions, assuming I could even hear the responses.

Move over Springer! ;)

I have spent a lot of time on his websites and I have participated in many other discusssions regarding lighting here on RC and other places as well. Sanjay has provided the reefing commumnity a quanitative benchmark instead of just personal perception.

I am still up in the air about my new lighting system, but that has to deal with the spread of light and how I want my new system to look to my eyes; back to a personal preference issue.

Thank You to Sanjay and MARS.

Sanjay's Talk

First of all, thanks Sanjay for coming again. Your talk was great. Well worth the cost.

Thanks Bruce for re-initiating the contact. Thanks Mike for chaperoning Sanjay.

Thanks to all the MARS members for being on your best behavior during the presentation. Yes, we are going to have to find a larger room pretty soon.

This is the third time I've seen Sanjay's talk. It really came together for me this time. The first two times were at conferences. The intimate venue helps.

always thankful to be part of this group; more so thankful to those that have taken lead.

BTW - his website is http://www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com/

Is there anyway we can post some of his charts from his presentation on the MARS website? He mentioned that some of the plots that he did were not available online, but we could import the data to Excel and do out own plot. I'm too lazy to do that.

Also - being a former science geek, I love the fact the talk was based on data and not just an opinion.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the MARS members who opened up their homes to the mini-tank tour with Sanjay today. It was a blast, and great to show off our systems. I know we did not get to see as many systems as I had hoped, and it was a very small group that got to go on the tour (per our hosts' request), but it was very fun and well received.

Oh, and thanks for all the goodies we got to send Sanjay back home with.

I'd ask first in case the charts where meant for a first right of refusal to an article ;) If posted on the web first, most magazines will not publish the article.
